Adding Sump, How the Plumbing?

Hello All,

I am adding a sump to my running 29g Biocube. The sump is the Somatic 60 sump system. The return is a Sicce Syncra Silent 3.0 (714gph)

Attached is a schematic of my plumbing thoughts.

The bulkheads are 1" already drilled.
Return will be thread x thread, drains are slip x thread.

Drain is hopefully a modified Herby System as follows,
starting in tank, all 1"
90 Street elbow to to bulkhead slip, 90 threaded street to gate valve, 1" tube to sump
Backup is the same except gate valve is a ball valve

Return starting at pump,
3/4" tube to 4 way tee, one side of tee goes ball valve and drain, other side goes to manifold with 2 x 1/2" tube openings and ball valve and back to sump, last side converts to 1" pipe, ball valve, tube, ball valve, 90 elbow to thread bulkhead, thread 90 elbow, 1" tube to tee, threw side to 1" pipe, bushing, and 3/4" loc-line to tank. Other side of tee bushing to 1/4" tube fitting and 1/4 tube to chamber 1.

The tube in chamber 1 is because settlement builds up in the chamber and this will keep it suspended.

There will be 2 holes before the tee in the tank to prevent back siphon. What size should they be?

The water height will be approximately 5.5" from the two outlets.
The sump can hold approx. 13.5G, running it will between 6g and 7g leaving
7.5g to 6.5g. Chamber 2 and 3 from the tank will drain approx. 4-6G so that should work.

Questions:
1. Are the anti-siphon holes going to work like I think.
2. Do I need to tee the the first drain outside of the bulkhead to have air escape.

Thank You

Skip the ball valve on the emergency drain. No good can come of it, and it will also restrict the flow some.

1. On the anti syphon: if the hole you drill in the return will be exposed to air after the tank starts to drain, it will work fine. Doesn't have to be big(1/8"). Or you can have the return at the water surface, so it sucks air as soon as the pump shuts off.

2. I think I understand what you are asking. The drains on a Herbie will have no air. That's what makes them silent, so don't worry about air escaping.

Thanks, that make more sense.

I was also just contemplating if 3/4" lock-line is necessary. I think it will look pretty big in a 29G tank. From what I can tell 1/2" still can flow 475gph.

What opinions do you guys have
