For topoff I use RO/DI water. Adding saltwater will soon raise your salinity much too high since salt does not evaporate and stays in your system. Only use new saltwater (mixed up with RO/DI again) at water changes.
mikcc - unnecessary comments aren't needed. Though perhaps more applicable in the "new to the hobby" forum, EVERY reefer has had this question.
YayItsCola - AZDesertRat is correct. Since the salt doesn't evaporate - only water - you should only top off with RO/DI water. It's better you ask a question some may think is dumb rather than have your tank crash from something simple. Welcome to the hobby!
Some use RO water from those machines you can find at grocery stores etc, but quality can be questionable sometimes. Who knows how well they keep things up? Plus RO/DI is better.
In the long run getting your own RO/DI saves money and most definitely the hassle of hauling jugs of water.
You can even set up an auto top off that will refill the lost water automatically with no effort on your part. That's the best way and not too difficult to set up.
