adeebm's 50G High Tech Cube

Hey everyone,

I've been in my apartment for a year now, and can't stay away from reefing any longer. Moving in the future is going to be a pain, but I'll save that for later :spin2:

I still have a 180G FOWLR running at my parents' house, but with far less room here, I had to settle for a 50G cube. The tank is 24"x24"x20" from SCA with 3 sides starphire. Came with sump and stand.

My goal for this build is clean and minimal on the outside, high tech on the inside. I love automation and also traveling, so I'm hoping the tank will be able to run itself for a week if needed. Without further ado, the parts list:

24"x24"x20" starphire rimless cube
19-3/4"x16-1/2"x13" sump
24"x24"x30" black MDF stand
Apex system(new model)
Apex DOS w/containers
2x 100W eheim jagers
MP40wQD
Radion XR30w G3 Pro
AquaMaxx ConeS CO-1
Jebao DCP-5000
Tropic Eden Mesoflakes
There are a couple things still left to pick out, such as live rock/sand and an ATO.

I'm sure this wall of text was boring, so here are some pics!

Looking good

I'm impressed with the quality of the tank. No visible marks on the glass, edges are well formed. The acrylic on the overflow is a bit bowed, but not a big deal. Sump quality was mediocre, but hey, it's a sump.

The stand I'm not terrible impressed with. Will grab some pics later, but the siding is peeling off(probably too short and not well glued). It presumably came with 4 legs on the bottom of the stand, but two of them had been shorn off, either during in the factory or during shipping. I removed the remaining legs and replaced with large felt pads.

Now, it's on to plumbing! The tank is drilled with 3 1" holes in the overflow. I'm thinking a beananimal setup with an over the top return is the way to go. Here are some sketches of the plumbing that my gf drew up. I'm not sure whether I should stick with 1" plumbing throughout, or scale up to a larger diameter.

The open drain has a gate valve, and the rest will have TUBVs. Going with black plumbing on top to blend with overflow, and orange tubing/grey fittings underneath to match Apex :spin3:

I'll update later this week as parts start coming in. Stay tuned!

Nice start! I would use a 6-12" piece of silicone tubing for your final connection to your return pump and put the pump on a silicone pad, that will quiet things down.

Small update. I've been taking it slow and planning while equipment comes in. Finally have most of the stuff here.

I decided to line the bottom of the stand for easy cleanup.

The next step is to build a frame inside the stand. I need something to screw the apex and modules into, as well as hold the PVC in place. The MDF wood is already so weak, I don't feel comfortable drilling that. So I'm going to add a plywood frame inside. 1/2" plywood and a couple angle brackets. Debating adding a shelf as well, but I'll have to see how much room the skimmer leaves.

After the stand, I can get on with plumbing!

Looks good. I've always liked sca tanks. What are you planning to keep in it?

Thanks! I'm not sure yet to be honest. First step is to get stable water. I was leaning towards SPS dominated, but then I saw this tank and it's pretty inspirational. I'm considering softies/NPS now.
