We may be moving across the country and I want to take my fish with me.

I am thinking I will set up a new system (much bigger) at the destination and then ship my fish over.

has anyone done anything like this before. Any and all advice is welcome.

I will be selling off a couple of my fish prior to the move, to reduce the bioload in the new system.

I have moved fish before, but only up to ten hours away so I took mine with me. I think you have it right. Set up the new tank, cycle it, and then have the fish shipped. Make sure whatever holding system is used to keep the fish until you are ready (a big plastic container should be fine) is isolatd so you don't have to quarantine at the new place.

moving is quite an ordeal .. will you really have the time to be dealing with just the fish for a while... just moving a tank is hard enough, if the fish aren't to rare i would think trading them in at your lfs would be a safer idea. and if your in good standing with them maybe they will hold them for you until you get settled in and ten ship them to you . just a thought .... ether way good luck with your move :)

You have the right idea. From the couple times I've moved my system the tank was always the last thing to move out of the house. I never setup a whole new system, but always had enough Saltwater at the destination mixed up to fill up the system. As far as shipping your fish, if you have a LFS that also does mail order, maybe ask them to help you package them up correctly.
