advice on a mangrove tank

I am going to set up one of my vats in the greenhouse with mangroves. Was wondering if anyone had some advice to share? I might have already made a mistake by ordering the magroves with some roots and a couple of leaves on them . I have read the seed pods alone are better too start with.

The mangroves with roots and leaves will probably be fine, the main thing is to know what the salinity was that they were housed in, and either copy that in your tank or anticipate a very long acclimation. Check for threads by triterium. He had a really nice setup in his greenhouse.

sorry to derail wanted to PM ya redox but you dont recieve them I was wondering what type of tubing you used for your DIY geothermal chiller for the buried portion and how it has held up have you lost any flow from internal build ups????

rottbo I discontinued the use of the geothermal chiller because in the summer it was actually adding heat. I used 3/4" thinwall pvc pipe and it is still underground and holding water well just not in use. I havent used it for more than a year and there is still life in the pipes (pods, and other squiggly organisms) I buried the lines 3' deep but it was on a sand dune and the winds shifted the depth of the sand causing my chliier too fail:( I have now gone to a titanium heat exchanger and am very happy with it! As far as the mangrove go Im just looking for some new fun,my parameters are perfect and dont need fixin but I need something new ;)

graveyardworm I guess Im a day late on Triterium as he has sold all his goodies. The guy im getting the mangroves from has already acclimated the mangroves to standard specific gravity in an aquarium1.025 or so(supposedly)

Just suggesting you check his discussion threads, not sure what happened exactly, but sadly yeah he got out of it awhile back. Plenty of vendors out there for mangrove pods.

they showed up today and he shipped em friday from Hawaii.Man the usps was right on time. They look very healthy and fresh. I am happy. Now on to the next step of converting a vat into a mangrove forest bonzai scale.

I just put them in different places too see what might happen. I am going too make a mangrove forest vat 3'x7'x16". I must first figure out the proper "dirt mix" that wont mess with my sps?

why wouldnt standard walt smith refugium mud work???? never caused me any probs only thing I could see as a problem with it is that it will cost alot to fill a bed that large maybe a mixture of sand and mud

rottbo Im sure the WS mud would work and as you said it could get costly to do what I want with it. I am waiting for a response from the guy I the mangroves from,he sais he can get me some mud from where these mangroves originate from. I will put a couple inches of it with an inch or so of southdown

Redox, Aren't you in the Outer Banks? I collected my fuge mud directly from the gulf. Snorkeled out to about 6' deep water with several heavy duty poly bags and just used them and my hands to scoop the mud up. Got all kinds of cool clams and biotype critters :) And most of all... it was fun and free!

I know you guys are in a little colder water up there so some 'critter research' may be in order to make sure you don't end up with any predatory whelks or similar 'bad' critters. Visit one of the local state parks up there for a id pamplet for snails..etc. If you're setting up a separate vat just for a mangrove tank you could leave it detached from the main system until you were sure everything was kosher with the vat.

They may make it for the fact they only have 2 leafs, but those roots are not aquacultured or sand raised. I currently have about 50 mangroves in 2 tanks and my DSB outdoors. i will post some picks for you in the weekend. ps don't expect too much as far as nitrate till they grow and spray them with fresh water daily. The spray water makin it with some general purpose liquid miracle grow. Dilute only 5 drops in a gallon, very small amount of fertilizer.

I didnt get them for nitrates as I have zero in that department . These are just for fun and something new;) I would like to see your pics Agios:D
