Advice on new Mag pump

I currently have a an md-7 pump, but I'm not getting as much flow as I want. I have to throttle back the input to the fuge using a valve. I'm thinking of getting and md-12, but it might be to much flow. I have a valve on the output side of the pump. Will it hurt a pump to close the valve to limit the output?

It won't hurt. I tee off the return with a ball valve so that water goes back into the refugium, but you can just close it off slightly if you'd like. Not all the way obviously
