been neglecting water changes to my tank and dosing for trace elements, but fighting phospates and hair algae so i'm gonna take some advice finally(cause i'm hard headed) and start water changes i just did 20 gallons tonight. So my question is what would be the a good schedule on a 125 gallon tank with softies(mushrooms, ricordeas, polyps, leathers, etc. 2nd how much should i change is 20 gallons good enough and how long should i mix new ro/di water with new salt(instant ocean).

If you're fighting phosphates, I would probably do a 50% water change or so, then 20 gallons per week until it's under control. Do you think your phosphates are from over feeding or over stocking?

Under normal conditions, I'd just do one 20 gallon change per month on a 125 probably. As always, JMO, which really isn't worth that much... :D

I do 22 gallon every couple of weeks and have been since November and the tank looks so much better. I don't have phosphates or nitrates to speak of but my tank is also sps dominated. Once a month and your 20 gallons will be fine. Figure out where the nitrates are coming from and tackle that issue.

i wonder how old the ro/di is and what the tds is also

you are supposed to feed the tank--trace elements?

my fish get food once or twice a week if they are lucky

my ro/di unit is only 3 months old and is water general mfg. company, everything tested good 3 months ago but phosphates didn't use ro water when i set this tank up in july, but for three months been using ro/di water 5 stage system, also seachem reef complete(calcium, strontium, magnesium), seachem reef carbonate, and only 1/3 dose of purple up, been using phos reactor for 2 weeks now with seachem phosguard. Don't have a tds check, one of powerhead shot craps want to buy a couple of new hydor koralia powerheads but sold out at dr.foster and smith, so water circulation could be an issue since hair algae going nut in last week. I'm going to stick with 20 gallons water change a month for now with phos reactor on might change to different phos remover to put in like phosban instead of aluminum oxide(seachem phosguard). Can i feed fish only twice a week i got gold stripe maroon clown, dragon goby, cleaner wrasse, sixline wrasse, lawnmower blenny, sailfin tang, yellow tang, flame angel, one mated pair of sailfin mollies, and pink spotted goby. Most just eat algae off rocks anyway.

I'd feed a few more times than 2 times a week. Have you ever met Farmer, He's a tooth pick with skin stretched over it. Chelsey could carry him around like one of her Barbie dolls :D.
