A week ago I decided to take advantage of my under tank 29 gal sump. It's has 2- 7" socks then sand bed with layer of rock Cobble, Cheeto with night lamp, then pump & skimmer, heater. Last week I put in the sand bed and broke up the large rock into cobble, got some Cheeto from my son and put in some copapods. Put a nice led light on a 10 hr. Timer hoping the Cheeto grows/. 2 days ago I noticed the lps not opening as much. Did some testing and my nitrates and phosphorous were high. Nitrates were 40-60. Phosphorous was 65. I did a 5% water change and vacuumed the sand bed, changed socks. Yesterday I checked it again, nitrates rose to 70-90. Phosphorous was 133. I did another 10% water change and vacuumed sand very well in all the nooks n cranny. This morning I tested. Nitrates were 100-120. Phosphorous was 167. I did another 10% water change. Cleaned tank, brushed rock , cleaned skimmer, changed socks, etc. tested again 4 hours later. Nitrates were back down to 40-60 and phosphorous was same. I should mention also 2 weeks ago I changed salt to instant ocean salt ( all they had ) and mixed my salt a little stiffer because my salinity was down, I also mixed in teaspoon of buffer powder and teaspoon of trace minerals in r/o water ( same water I have been doing water changes with in last 3 days) advise. 90 gal lps tank with 29mgal sump. 4 fish plus 15 lps coral.
