aeration

Supposely with all the flow that's provided by your powerheads, pumps, you shouldn't need airstones for additional aeration. You can if you want in the sump, but that'll probably introduce bubbles back into your display tank, which most people try to minimize. I think part of it is asthetics more than anything else. I think people have left airstones to QT and FW setups.

Fish need dissolved oxygen. Oxygenation mainly takes place on the water surface. Having the tank open to air and some movement on the water surface increases oxygenation. Using air stones to generate bubbles is actually an inefficient way to oxygenate a tank.

the bubbles from airstones isnt what provides the aeration its the ripples and water movement it creates at the top of the tank.
