I was wondering who knew about reef safe fish that comes out of Africa or that is around Africa. I can get Gem Tangs, Leopard Wrasses, Yellow Belly Hippos, but would live more info on other species found out there, or even dive photos from there. Thanks

Philip

It is hard to include all the info in one simple reply, however, I suggest you read the Reef Fishes series. These books have very thourough information about reef fishes, their origin, natural habitat and captive care. You can find these books in RC store too.

There has been a 'rash' of imports coming in from the African coast. Most notable has been the African Flameback. It is said to have a 'brighter back.' But ? :)

I know, thank you though. I am looking to see if there are any more fish that are imported on a "regular" basis as african fish go. I need to konw what fish are native to africa that are in the fish trade and are reef safe. I know there are not many but would like to know what.

Chrysurus Angels.

McCosker's flashers. Although they can also get found in the I.O.

Gem Tangs are not particularly "commonly" imported, albeit they do come in.

If you can get Kingii Angels those are only found in Africa, but I dunno it's legal to get 'em. They are an angel collectors "holy grail" type of deal.

Allardi Clowns I believe are African only.

Pincecones can be found in Africa.

Apogon Aureus

Citron Gobies are found in Africa among other places

Those are the ones off the top of my head.

I was looking through my anthias book:
These are not "unique" but can be found in Africa
Carberryi
Evans
Bimacs

From wetwebmedia, Butterflies that might survive in captivity (again most are not "specific" to Africa, just can be found there):
Chaetodon Dolosus
Falcula's
Hoefleri
kleini
marleyi
melannotus
mertensii
