AGA Stand?

Has anyone used this stand without doing any modifications to it. I have the same stand on my 75G but I added some 2x4's and a piece of plywood across the top. It is for a 40 breeder that will be my LPS tank. I think that it will be ok but would like some input. I was a little nervous about the bottom of the tank not sitting on plywood but I guess the plastic trim on the tank doesn't allow the glass to sit on the plywood anyway. It is made out of 3/4" pine.

i would think that it would be fine. i had a stand similar to that for my old 70G fresh water tank and had no problems.

Yes, full reef, about 1 1/2 inches of sand and about 150 pounds of rock. My thoughts were the same as yours when I bought mine, it just seemed like the wood was to thin to support all that weight, but I figured that since it was a reputable company I would go with it as it was.

I know that some people were putting foam under their tanks is anyone still doing that or just leaving all the weight on the glass itself with no other support.

typically see styrofoam under the tank w/ larger acrylic tanks, for much the same reason as you mentioned above - the trim on a small/mid-sized glass tank is all that is making contact w/ the stand. foam under it would make no difference.

heap is on the right path saying foam under a standard glass tank with the rim on it is not necessary. the frame of the tank is what it is designed to sit on.

i have that same pine stand in the 36x18 model for my 40 breeder and did no mods to it. they're designed to hold the tanks so i don't see a need to brace them. most of the diy stands you see are overbuilt. it's not a bad thing but not really needed in many cases.

Thanks for the info. I realize that the stands are designed for aquariums but they probably weren't designed to hold all that extra sand and rock that reefer's subject them to. I was just a little nervous about it but it sounds like I should be fine. Thanks again.
