Anemone ---> Powerhead ---> Ammonia off charts

Never will a BTA go near my tank, another poor little thing went through my powerhead AGAIN, it was very weird this time though I came in very early one morning to the very smell when my tank was cloudy last time but this time it was not but I knew that it had to be the anemone as there was some flesh on the rim of the Tunze this was on Thursday, I have done a coupke of 10% water changes and have been running ozone. Yesterday I did a 40% water change and the ammonia is still above 5, I am going to do another 40% today. This hurts so much as last time I lost everything but did not do massive water changes like now, last time it took 3 weeks for my ammonia to drop to 0 and I really dont think I can keep doing 40% water changes everyday. Worse case scenario is my lfs can't take my animals if this is the case what else can I do?

Keep doing the water changes it will drop. YOu really need to cover those powerheads otherwise this is just going to keep happening. I see you are in the uk do you have prime or amaquel there? That after being added will make the ammonia non toxic to your fish but you still need to keep doing the water changes to get it down. And i would look around the tank for any flesh pieces of the anemone that may be still laying around and get rid of them.

Never going to get another bta, condy's fine, they dont walk, do not want to risk, I have ammo lock but it does not work past 3 on the ammonia chart my tank is well above that, my leathers are shedding skin, all polyps shut only condy is out!!!

Is the fact I am doing these massive water changes going to speed it up or am I going to have to wait 3 weeks again, I really don't think I have the energy to do this everyday for 3 weeks, so close to packing this in but I can't give in as this is my dream tank!

another 40% change just completed, Will wait till the morning to test again for ammonia!

I have a couple of bottles of bacterlife for speeding up bacteria growth is it worth adding this as well?

Will reducing lighting help relieve some of the stress on corals or should I leave as is?

Don't give up:)
Look at it as a hard lesson learned. Now just remember though the chart will still show ammonia it is just not toxic to your fish. Are you sure your test kits are right. So in total how much water have you changed?
The leathers could just be a coincidence as they shed when they grow. I have had toadstools not open for 2 weeks as it shed. And if the condy is open wide it makes me wonder. How are all the fish? None are gasping at the top for air?

I feel better after this water change :)

Alll the fish are at the bottom of the tank not looking very happy,
All corals are closed, only this die hard condy is out! he survived the last crash though!

I have changed a total of 80% of the water in two days. I have added a spare PH so that I am nearly turning the water over 70 x per hour I think this may help, test kits are fine new and i watched the spike clearly. I am thinking of adding this bacteria liquid stuff but not sure.

Don't know what else I can do to help these poor animals, I really hope my lfs will take them tomorrow, unless by magic my ammonia has made a substantial drop in the morning

Thanks for your much needed support

hey are you the guy that had another bta anemone and went into a powerhead and got shreaded, i read your post, omg , last time you lost all your corals, btw did u get the rock cover for power head, well i hope you and your tank pull thru this, good luck

That is what i' hoping for tomorrow, but I have to look at worse case, I do not have anything other than a bath to hold the animals in. Maybe I could put just the corals in there Extreme thinking....!

ammonia is above 5, must be as when I did a 40% water change yesterday the result was at the highest still.

Yes I bought the tunze enclosure, and about a week afterwards I found the anemone half under it. I am cursed with these things in this tank! There will not be a third time, You can only try, but I believe these belong in other tanks or even better the sea. Really hurts when I am trying to give things a better and safer quality of life and this happens. Thanks for the support

Yesterday I went to my LFS and they kindly provided me with a large bag of what look slike LR rubble, I was advised to remove the Ozone from the venturi and put it into my sump via an Air stone, this has nbow been done. This mornig when I woke up some of the yellow polyps were out and this is the first time in about a week, fish are all ok and the leather had a few sparse polyps showing, I have hope that I may get over this with minimal loss. I will test the ammonia when I get back tonight and hopefully I will get a reading that is measurable, I will do another 40% water change tomorrow morning XxxxXXXxxxXXXFingers Crossed XxXxxxxXXxXXXxX

I hope it goes well for you!!

This story makes me concerned about my BTA. it moves around a little, but I dont think I have any place it could really get "sucked in" to any of my power heads... yet I still wonder if it could.

Thanks Xsive
I have very powerful Powerheads (Tunze 6200) that shread with ease anything that can cover the entire grill section! When I had a smaller tank with maxijet type PH's they did not seam that interested in moving towards them, I have read a lot about it happening though, more so when they release themselves into the water and end up on the intake of one. I am sure that you will be ok, just this setup of mine that is cursed with BTA's!!

You will be pleased to know the ammonia levels are down to 1.5, As you would expect everything still looks stressed but there is massive improvement with the fish and some corals; my sea pen was fully extended for the first time.

The LFS really helped with their filter media (obtained from an eel tank) Does anybody know what this is; it looks like LR but is most definitely man made and comes in nuggets about two inches across (I am going to fill my whole area of the sump with it)?

Sean,
I have been following your thread and I am glad everything is improving. I will keep my fingers crossed for you.

Thank You phxpdrocks, I think all the little fishcals are feeling all the support from this great site and making it through, I am so much more confident this time as I did not lay down beaten, but took action and tried everything I could, something that I realise is very much needed to make it through the hard times that this hobby all too often throws at us!

Tomorrow I am confident that the 40% water change will get a few corals out of their shells... They better, lol

OOOO A OOOO la la Ammonia is 0!!! :) :)

Everything is on the route to recovery here are a couple of pictures, I have done a lot of aquascaping today to mark the project relaunch! What do you guys think.
