Age old debate...herbie, bean animal or durso???

New set up is a 200 gallon deep dimension with a sump directly under the tank. Currently is drilled with a 1.5 inch and 1 inch hole on both back corners. I'll be using 2 x mp40 and 2 x mp60's for flow, so I don't think i'll be depending on return pump for as much flow, except to have it move thru the sump.

So the question is, do I use both 1.5 inch holes and one of the 1 inch holes as drains and go bean animal or herbie? Or do I do dursos on each corner with 2 return lines? Noise (and overflow) are the key factors.

With the canopy your building I don't think you will hear anything. The only sound I heard on my 120 was the water going through the teeth and into the overflow. I'd say durso would be fine.

I have a similar design and have set up a modified durso. One line in each overflow is a drain. One line is an emergency overflow drain. And the last one is my return.

I have valves that I can adjust on each of the drain lines to control the level of the water in the overflow. I have the drain lines emptying below the water line in my sump so there's zero noise from them.

The only time I get any noise at all is when the the water level in the overflows goes up or down due to what I think is atmospheric pressure. Seems on days like today when the air pressure is changing the drains start acting up. Sometimes water will drain down the emergency pipe, which causes a noise in the sump because that line ends about 5 inches above the water line, or the main drain will suck air and I get bubbles in the drain.

I might have to tweak the valve a tiny little bit once a week or so, but most of the time the loudest thing on my tank is the skimmer pump.
