AgentSPS' 300 Gallon ***DreamReef***

Dang. So there's no treatment for this bacterial skin infection? Do you think the infection came in with one of the wrasses when you introduced it? I am planning on getting a ton of wrasses...so I'd like to be prepared for these type of things if possible.

She's doing really well. None of my other fishes bother her and she seems to have gotten used to my small tank (60g with 6 fishes). I'm hoping to introduce her to the 270g after I have grow a decent population of pods...but might not be able to wait that long.

Metal Halide...and I will be trying out the Lumateks that I first read in your thread. :D

Hey sorry for the long delay! Been crazy at work but thats a pretty lame excuse not to post ;)

I am not sure how the microbe was introduced and if it is isolated to the fish or living in the sand. Its odd, however, that I have a number of wrasses that are fine and so many others were wiped out. Even wrasses that had been in the tank for a year or more. Don't think I will ever know. Not sure if replacing the entire sandbed would work either. Not that I am really willing to go through that kind of effort/pain.

Have you moved the Femininus to the 270 yet?? My thoughts are that your wrasses won't make a big dent in your pod population as most of them seem to only come out at night. The stupid ones won't last long.

Wanted to give a brief update on the skimmer performance. I will try to snap a pic soon.

So far very impressed! The fine threading on the custom gate valve to regulate water level in the skimmer allows super fine tuning. The design on the H&S made it hard to dial in.

It will be interesting to see what skimmate looks like long term but as of now its been super dark as I am able to very effectively dry skim. I mention long term because I am not sure how much of what I am pulling out now was buildup from what the H&S could not pull out since the tank has been setup. I was never able to get such a dry skim from my H&S.

I should note that I have installed an AVAST Skimmer Swabie. Wonder how much this would have improved skimming on the H&S had I used the Swabie on that.

BTW AVAST is awesome! Not only is it a well made product, their customer service is unparalleled. I ordered a custom built model on Thursday and it arrived Monday! Go out an get one while they are still super inexpensive!

Don't need your posts to check out all the cool pics in your thread. :D

Have not moved the Femininus yet. She's going in last! I just installed the lights over the weekend. 2 lumen bright large pendants with Lumateks. I've only played with the 250w mode, and so far looks like I'm getting good light spread with just two radiums. I will play with the 400w mode and the super lumen mode this weekend.

Eric what are skimmer swabies? Please provide some details I'd like to know how they improve skimming. Will it work on a ATB?

look up avastmarine dot com

Its basically a motorized rubber wiper for the neck of your skimmer. Keeping the neck clean greatly improves performance on skimming. Most of the previous models have come out of europe and were crazy expensive.
They probably already have your model on file but if not you just need to give them measurements and they will make one custom for you. I think I paid like $130 for mine.

Nevermind, I see the swabbie runs continuously now. I saw a review where they shut if off and had it wipe down as part of the review and I got confused. How do you like it so far?

Yep no inteligence built into the unit. Although that would be a great enhancement for AVAST to explore. MRC's kalk reactor has on board computer.

For me I just have it plugged in the same controller position as my kalk stirrer. 4 mins every 3 hours. Works awesome!!

Eric,

Do you see what's on the LA fish list today.....:D

Haha afraid to see the price! Unless you grab her, I have a feeling she might stay up for a few days. Well thats based off Aust coral sale rates for them but maybe fish are a different story.

Eric, hows the skimz monster skimmer coming along? Any updates?

I have had to replace two of the Eden pumps to date. The first one made a grinding noise from day one. Skimz was great about it. They sent me two of the newer generation Eden 5000 pumps with larger impellars. I should also point out they 3 day DHL shipped it to me from Singapore!
More recently one of those replacement pumps chewed up an impellar and they are sending me two redesigned impellers. Apparently there were cooling issues with the prev design. Def seems like Skimz is having some design issues around the pumps but their support has been stellar.

Overall though this skimmer has been kicking a$$!! The skimmate is the blackest and stinkiest of any skimmer I have ever run. It definitely puts a lot of the other big name European brands on notice. Would highly recommend once Skimz perfects the Eden pumps.

Man, this is awesome! I can't believe I missed this entire thread. I followed the build when Invincible had it and always admired Erik's corals and set up. Can't wait to see this in person.

Awesome thread AgentSPS. I'm about to enter the world of salt water myself, I'm turning my fresh water Fluval Edge into a nano reef tank. not quite as exiting as yours but I'll get on your level some day.

P.S. Thanks again for the m3, it's tucked away in the garage for winter lol.

Hi Alen-

Thanks again for bailing me out with the spare pump. Roger sent me a free replacement pump for the troubles and I also stocked up on spare parts. Give me a call anytime you are in the area.
