Aggies 40B SPS build

A little background to start things off. I first began my obsession with reef keeping in May 2014. While on a trip to petsmart with my soon to be wife we stopped at the fish tanks. She told me as a kid she had a freshwater tank. Before you know it we walked out of there with a 37 gallon tank, stand, heater, and cheap LED light. We knew we wanted saltwater, but knew NOTHING about keeping one. I was especially drawn to the coral side after my first trip to a LFS.

Fast forward to now, my 37 gallon is still doing good, losses have been minimal over the past 8 months. I am battling a bad GHA outbreak right now but thats another story. For the past 3 months I have been chomping at the bit to do another tank build. I would say I have read things on RC every single day since the day I joined, and I am the same as most people I wish I knew what I do now back then. I toyed with the idea of a 90 gallon tank for quite a while, but financially it just would not be feasible to do it how I would like.

However a few days ago we walked into petco for some cat litter and BAM. 1$ per gallon sale and they had 1 40B left. Looked to be in good shape so I bought it and a 20L for a sump. Guess my new build will be a 40B SPS dominated tank with plenty of color.

Have been looking forward to doing a build thread on here so I can have plenty of opinions while I embark on this journey as I am still learning as we all are! Hope you enjoy.

Definitely following! I just set up a 40B a week ago and I'm loving it so far! Be sure to update with what equipment you plan to use and what your stocking list is going to look like. Congrats on your first build here on RC will be following. Good luck.

Here are the tanks! I haven't leak tested them yet but inspected them pretty carefully in the store. Going to try to leak test them tomorrow, crossing my fingers for no drips.

Here is The stand I picked up yesterday from a guy on Craigslist. It is a stang built for a 40B, Originally I wanted a stand a little longer than the tank itself, but for 40 dollars I could not pass it up. I Am pretty pleased that I got the DT, sump tank, and stand for 100 dollars.

I am going to waterproof the inside and put a bottom in it.

Thanks for following along! I will try to get an equipment list of what I am thinking about using up sometime tonight.

Very nice deals! You can't beat the price you got on that stand for sure...and you have a wiener dog, it's is adorable(I have 4 myself:)).

Thanks, I was pretty proud on the stand. Sadly I still have made 0 progress on the build. Got other financial matters to attend to as well as buying salt/food/supplies for my 37. Hopefully I'll be in the SPS game sooner rather than later. In the meantime I have pretty much been glued to the SPS thread every night after work. Saw your build thread, beautiful tank.

Thanks! She passed away about 2 months ago, me and my wife adopted a beautiful 3 year old dachs from the Houston SPCA about a month ago now. Shes pretty sweet.

Oh that's terrible. I'm glad you were able to rescue a new family member, three of ours are rescues and they are just so amazing. I don't know how anyone gave them up!
Thanks for the compliment on our reef, it really is my obsession and this site is group therapy
I will check on your thread as you continue your progress. It's better to go slow and get it right rather than rushing things(just tell yourself that when you are tired of waiting)

I know the feeling! Strange because I never had fish growing up, but the hobby has grabbed a hold of me. Thanks for the encouragement
