"Aggressive" Reefs

Just looking for pics of your reefs with aggressive fish. I have kept "aggressive" fish in almost all my reefs with success and find them so interesting.

Curious what corals you have been able to keep with what fish. Pics please

No I should have worded that better. LOL. I just mean the type of fish people do not usually keep in reefs. For example I keep puffers in my reef. They are known as non reef safe. Most of the reefs Im thinking of would not be full blown sps reefs but just more like softies and macro algae and whatnot.

I just like seeing Triggers, Puffers, Tusks, etc. in reef settings.

Was just curious to see people FOWLR's that ended up turning into a reef.

Here's my 125, what I would call "aggressive reef."

Current fish are: Blueface Angel, Naso Tang, Hawaiian Blue Spotted Puffer, Goldbar Wrasse (for sale), and Potters Angel. (The tusk has passed away )

Corals: 3 monti cap frags, 2 BTA clones, and an open brain trying to hang on. The xenia in the pic has since been consumed.

Yeah for sure! I just wanna see people reefs from this section of the forum. We always see the crazy sps dominated reefs in the reef discussion forum but I like to see others as well!

AquaKnight407- I love your tank! Thats a 125? Looks bigger. I really like how you have aquascaped it and the way the lighting compliments it perfectly. Very nice and what a beautiful angel.

Thanks! Lighting is a 48" fixture bolted to the canopy. 2 175watt MH's and 2 110watt actnics VHOs. Perfect for lighting up both islands.

Yep, only a 125, 72"x18"x22". I think the rock work has a lot to do with it. You need goods amount of it, but room for the fish. I really like BIG pieces of LR. That one big shelf is over 40lbs itself.

Once the Goldbar heads out, I am planning on a Sargassum Trigger, Lei Trigger (the real one Sufflamen Bursa) and maybe another angel once the Naso outgrows the tank. I am surprised how well the Blueface took to the Potters being added, so I think a 'medium' angel would be the perfect complement.

Yeah your rockwork does have a lot to do with it for sure. Just a very nice tank and a great selection of fish. How big is the Tusk?

Wow very nice! That angel is huge. Very healthy looking fish.

I really like both of these reefs because they are more about the fish and less about the corals...well in my opinion. The corals are just more of a background thing but the fish are the real centerpiece and I love that.

Unfortuntely the tusk had to be down put about 2 weeks ago. Not exactly sure what happened, had gotten heavy lympho, and just degraded in front of my eyes. Went from a happy eating fish to uninterested, to hiding, to lying flat on ground in QT. By that time his tail was almost crumbling with any movement and had two severe infections on his tail and private area. By then, the best he could do was 'death circles' with assitance from myself, so I knew it was his time. I'm sure those infections didn't feel good and didn't want to prolong the probable pain.

I add him for 3 months, which is longer then I think damage from cyanide would have shown, but who who knows? Could have burned a hole in his liver/intestines/etc.

Sorry to hear this. Its very sad when a seemingly healthy fish suddenly dies. I have had it happen more times than I care to think about. As for cyanide, Im not so convinced that 3 months is too long. I have had many butterflies die suddenly after a month or two and Butterflies are often cyanide caught.

I do agree with putting a fish down when its in a lot of pain and suffering. I have had to do this a few times, most recently when my porcupine bite half of my Kole tangs face off by accident when eating. He was in rough shape. I put him to sleep with Clove Oil and then into the freezer. You of course just have to make sure to use enough clove oil to really put them to sleep. Some fish seem to be very tolerant of clove oil and it just makes them look kind of drunk. It can of course also be use din small dosages as an anesthetic. I have had to use it as an anesthetic to trim puffer overgrowm teeth in the past.

Thanks guys, the Blueline was great, he nipped but no real damage. This was a tank I had in Virginia, I just moved to Fl in Feb so I'm still in the design stage of my new tank " 6'x6' cube"

Bluelines typically come into the country this time of the year, if you have a good LFS thay can typically find them anytime, if the money is there.

I love this thread, keep posting up the tanks...I need ideas

FTS Be nice. I need new ro filters, and feed heavy. The fish are the centerpiece of the tank. Corals just add color.
