Aiptasia and LPS

Hello,

I am in the process of stocking my reef tank. I have some live rock that has a bunch (25 or so) aptasia on them. I have been injecting lemon juice into the aptasia that I can get to; however, many are on the back of the rock and in crevises that I cannot reach.

I am mainly planning on stocking LPS into this tank. If there is a "stinging" war between your average LPS and aiptasia, who would win?

Thanks,
Chris

I'm not sure who would "win" but there could be damage to your LPS corals. I would try to erradicate them with some Pep Shrimp, Joe's Juice, or some kalk paste.

pep shrimp are the way to go.. They'll get the aptasia all cleaned up for you.

I would hate to see an LPS coral get stung up. It would definatly damage it.

Wow, OK. I guess I need to find a LFS that has the kind of peppermint shrimp that eat Aiptasia.

Thanks,
Chris

I would also highly recommend the peppermint shrimp. I got 2 and they totally took care of my aptasia issue...

Not to mention, they also took complete care of a flatwork problem I had. I had to starve the tank for a few weeks, but they found the flatworms to be tasty I guess :)

They also do not bother the coral except to take a bit of food from them from time to time... To counter this I feed the shrimp first now :)

I have never tried Joes. I use 1 spoon of kalk or lime with 2-3 spoons of tap water. Stir it, microwave it for 20-30 seconds. Then shoot it on them. It works great and the paste cakes & clings to them when the water hits it so they are stuck with it. It is also a lot easier than trying to inject them with something. Most I see are so fast it is hard to get a needle in them.

For a couple of reasons. 1. that's the way the recipe was when I got it. 2. The liquid/paste is hot so when it is squirted the cooler water clumps it and it clings onto the aiptasia and doesn't wash off. I am sure the heat helps do them in as well. Ever get hot grease or syrup on your hand and couldn't wipe it off? The burn is there a lot longer even if you do get it wiped off.

If nothing else works in a reasonable amount of time, simply remove the rock, bette to lose a rock than corals, then you dont need to take a chance.
