Aiptasia's Gone! Copperband

I've never really had a major aiptasia problem until recently. I've always kept them under control with Aiptasia X but they kept coming back. Recently they had spread to places I couldn't reach due to the aquascape. Wanted to try some nudis but I have a melanarus wrasse and read they would chomp on them. Then decided to try a Copperband Butterfly. I read they were hit or miss when it came to aiptasia. I also read that they are difficult to keep alive because they won't eat and that some will eat corals. I have a full mixed reef and decided to take the chance because the aiptasias were ****ing me off.

I looked around but did not see any that I liked. Saw one at Blue Seas that was there for about 5 weeks that was picking away at the rocks. I was told he was not eating except for picking at the rocks and sand. Rolled the dice and brought him home. Immediately he started to pick away just like at the LFS. For the next three weeks he did not eat anything I put into the tank but he was still picking away at the rocks and sand. He obviously was getting enough from that because he looked healthy. However, he had not touched the aiptasias. One day during the fourth week I looked in the tank in the morning and everything was normal including every single darn aiptasia. Came home 10 hours later from work and I could not believe it. 3/4 of all the aiptasias were completely gone. Out of approximately 12-15 aiptasias there were only 4 left and those were in places the CB could not reach. It's now been 6 weeks since I got him and all but 2 aiptasias are gone. I can see them but even I can't reach them because they are in a cave. CB is still not eating my food but super healthy. My worry know is that he will get the taste of something else. So far he's left all corals, SPS and LPS alone.
So for those of you that want to eradicate aiptsias naturally, I can vouch that CB should do the job you just have to be patient.

Here is a pic of him chomping on an aiptsia.

Ah lucky guy !

since I QT the fish, I teach them to eat frozen, and by the time they make it to the DT they have no interest in Aiptasia !

how are you going to rid the overflow, sump, and pipes?

Probably never Mike, but at least the display tank is clean of them which was my concern. I'm sure they are in there but the growth should be limited due to no light and if they release some spores, then that just means more food for the CB.

Try live black worms I have good luck with them for everything. I have only a punctato (or whatever it is) butterfly, but he didn't eat anything for a long time then one day began on the worms out of no where, despite weeks of trying them with no results. Now he eats everything that I put in the tank.

used live blackworms and brine to train mine to eat frozen. Now eats all frozen! Dunno if he eats aptasia; dont seem to have any though. ;)

I'll give the live black worms a try. Where do I get them.

Try live brine and then frozen Mysis , this worked for me with my aptasia eating copperbanded.

Tried both and he would not touch them. However, that was a while back when I first got him. I'm going to pick up some worms and try that first. If not I'll try them again. He definitely is healthy and picking away at the rocks though. Thanks for the advice guys.

Not a fish expert but notice fish get accustomed to things.

I bought a juvenile Red Sea Desjarni Sailfin tang cause they eat bubble algae. Sure enough he rid my tank of bubble algae for a few months. I thought i was done. Now bubble algae is springing up again and he wont touch them. He now eats all food i feed but not bubble algae.

Nature has its ways......

Let me know if u wanna sell that copper band I'm also battling some aiptasia now..got rid of my harlequin that I had trying some peppermint shrimp now.. Wish me luck

Just read an article in Coral magazine about CBB.

It states main reason for them not doing well is poor nutrition. Get it to eat frozen food ASAP. Dont let aiptasia be its only source of nutrition or it will perish.

Rudy, I tried three peppermints last year when I first noticed the aiptasia and the PM never touched the aiptasias but I have heard just like the CBB, they are hit or miss. I think for the PM it depends what region they come from. Good Luck. Hopefully you got the right ones.

When I first got in the hobby I thought I was getting little flowers on my LR, until later on I found out it was Aiptasia, to late all the rocks were cover by them. I bought seven peppermint and two and half years later, I'm still free of Aiptasia, and two peppermint still alive.

Eddie, I'm trying. He can't eat any more Aiptasias because they are all gone. However last night I checked on the tank after the lights were out. All of the fish were sleeping except for the CBB. He was on the prowl picking away at the rocks. He is either starving or he's learned that it's at night when all of the critters come out from the rocks. Believe me I want him to eat because I'm more afraid he'll start picking at the corals than dying, so I'll keep trying different foods. He does look great though. I'll keep you guys updated.
