After the first atempt at breeding akindynos... that netted me 12 babies. The next 2 attempts have been even worse.
I finally got the fish "trained" to lay on a tile. The first time I put the tile in and the female laid eggs they were all unfertilized. Then the fish laid eggs on a rock away from the tile. This was before the christmas break.. so I had to let the eggs go. Over the christmas break I guess they were not as well fed since I was away. This took them out of the rythem they were in. They finally laid a nice batch of eggs on the tile that was fully fertilized. I removed tile the night before hatching, and got a really good batch of babies. However, by next morning.. more than 1/2 were dead. Over the next week was slow attrittion and I had about 20 left by end of week one. They started the morphing process and now I have none left. The remaining ones just did not make it through the morphing process.
The fish laid again on the tile, last Wed, a day earlier than thier usual one week after the last hatch. This time the nest was huge.. the biggest I had ever seen by them. 3 days later... most of the nest is gone... too many unfertilized eggs. There are a few fertilized eggs.
Are akindynos difficult to breed... or its just this pair or me doing something wrong. ?
Now I have to tear down my setup to prep for my new tank.. so this will take them out of the breeding routine for a while.
