A night under the stars ... and the Aurora.

Peek-a-boo Moose

That camp does look pretty nice. Hopefully that moose stayed put and didn't charge after he saw the paparazzi clicking away! ;)

What's the weather like this time of year?

If you ever feel like it's too much work to shoot, process or post your photos, know that I LOVE seeing them. It's one of my most favored highlights of reef central and I'm sure that I am not alone.

As always, outstanding.

Thanks

Very nice, I like the northern lights shot. I assume you "painted" the tent with a flashlight or something to make it so nice and bright compared to the rest of the landscape?

Sweet. Nice little camp.

It was awesome. Here is a view as the sun left us for the evening..

No, he didn’t mind us at all. He was just checking us out to see what we were doing. He wasn’t visible for very long. 4 or 5 mins at the most and half of that was with trees blocking half his face! :) Those were at Denali a few weeks ago. It was fall up there, but sort of warm. Long sleeve shirt weather. Usually I am bundled up when I am there. There was frost one morning but it was light. Here in town this AM I went to look for moose and the puddles on the trail were froze over.

Sometimes I do feel that way so that’s for the comment. Makes taking the time to post more worth while! :)

Looks great. I use your photos to try to convince some friends we travel with to go to Alaska.

I’m glad … it is a spectacular place. You would not be disappointed with a trip up here!

Yes sir, exactly, I used my head lamp. It was funny the next morning to hear people saying there were no Aurora out. The one thing about photography is it takes sacrifice, and patience. I am better at the sacrifice thing (setting the alarm and waking every half hour or so … getting out of a toasty warm 0 degree sleeping bag and crawling out into the darkness and cold, burr). Many a time I have stepped out there with shorts and t shirt on only to see the Aurora going off. I grab my gear and start clicking away. By the time my fingers are numb I get a grip and get more gear on! My fiancée stuck her head out still wrapped up in her -20 degree bag. Would be nice, but I couldn’t operate the camera gear and change my compostion like that. Sure would be more comfortable though. I am trying to work on the patience thing. I’ve meet plenty of pros in Denali over the years I have been. Those guys will sit with an animal for 5 or 6 hours waiting for it to walk where they need it for their composition. I am getting better, but just not that dedicated yet. Maybe that’s why I do so much more landscape! The twilight and “golden” hours only last an hour or two at a time and you don't have to worry about it "bedding down" (though sometimes the clouds can snuff it out :)).

Here’s one without the tent. I got the Big Dipper in the upper left too :).

Both shots are exceptional. What did that moose do???? Those guys are big.

Thanks :).

The Moose are usually WAY more interested in other things :). That Moose above was in the forest in a protected area of Denali NP. He basically just disappeared back into the woods.

I have never had a serious issue with Moose, but most people up here would probably tell you they are more afraid of Moose than bears. I have heard many a story about people being charged by Moose. People get killed by them too. Only once did I have one really going crazy and I was at least 75 years away. He was just cranky because there was a lot of traffic on the trail and he was sick of it. I kept as far away from him as I could (I was out biking). There was another once with a cow that I was photographing. His ears were down the whole time I saw him. Snot and drool dripping from his nose and mouth. He was another one I didn't even try to get anywhere near. I let them make the decision of how close we'll be. Even with that at times they get too close for my comfort and I back away :). It's sad sometimes up at the park that people lose their common sense and interfere with the animals normal patterns and actions. It's usually a person on vacation with a 200mm lens trying to get a head shot. I have decent gear, but at time I am envious of those Pros with the 500mm lenses.

Once again thanks for the comments. I appreciate it, sometimes I wonder if anyone even looks or cares about these posts. It makes it more worthwhile to know they are enjoyed and appreciated.

Cheers.
