Algae control in a new aquarium?

Some yellow algae has started to grow in my aquarium. It's still cycling, so I know it's normal to expect some algae growth. However, the guy at the fish store recommended I get rid of the algae now by scrubbing it off with a sponge so I don't have problems with it overtaking the tank. It won't come off with a sponge though. What would you recommend I do to get rid of it?

Use one of the numerous glass or acrylic scrapers on the market, I use the Tunze Care magnetic scraper.

The film is just the tank cycling. I think it clears up on its own as you are no introducing nutrients into tank.

It's growing on live rock. I can't find that scraper for sale either.

Easy does it. Your tank will have many, many bursts of algae. One early on only indicates you've got an ecosystem developing, to feed many layers of life. If it proves lasting, first get some test kits (Salifert is good) and once you're cycled, hit the parameters in my sig line. If algae proves a problem, get a GFO reactor, not too spendy and works much more cheaply than endless struggling with critters.

It's most likely diatoms, typically goes away after a week or two on its own.
