Algae help

My tank as been up and running since April and I now see to have some sort of algae growing all over it. This tank is an upgrade from a previous tank so about half of the rock was already cycled and the other half was dry from marco rocks. Is this algae just a phase of the tank. I am only feeding once every three days. Water changed regularly. I have a refuge with cheato growing like crazy. The algae is very thick, like a mat. It starts out green then turns to red/brown and creates almost a blanket. I do have CC for the substrate which I know isn't the best to some people, but I am looking for any suggestions as to get rid of this stuff.

I have two koralia 2's and one koralia 1. Plus my return. I am using RO/DI water, but I might need new filters. Any other methods of lowering nitrates and phosphates besides feeding practices. Would a phosphoban reactor be worthwhile.

Do Not put any kind of chemicals in there to kill it off. It will kill the beneficial bacteria also. I had the same thing about 3 weeks ago. I finally got rid of it by actually removing it completely from the tank. Not just letting it go into the water column. Take an old fish net and scoop up the cyano. Dont dig the net either just kinda get under the cyano and scoop a little. If you use a turkey baster suck it up and and cyano. Just dont go deep you dont need to. Toss the whole mess either in the trash, down the sunk or in the toilet. Rinse out the net or turkey baster and do it again. By removing it, it will not be able to "root back down" as I say. I tried to "put the power heads on it" trick and it worked. I didnt have cyano in that spot anymore. Nope not that spot but everywhere else in the tank I did. even the places that had flow all over it and was making little valleys. Good luck on getting rid of it.
