siphons right off the rock, has a mucusy consistency. thought hair algae was more stringy with distinct strands. this is more of a clump.

thanks for the reply.

For some reason the thumbnails wont open....probably my computer.

But from the info above, it sounds more like bacteria or cyano though cyano tends to represent more of a mat than a clump. Is this how it grows---it looks white, which if this is the end product, may be the dying stage of hair algae which can be removed easily. But if it grows white, slimy, and easily removed it is not HA.

How old is the tank, water parameters, lighting schedule (if mh or t5, how old are the bulbs), feeding schedule

tank is a few years old, 75g/25g sump. i know i have PO4 0.25-0.5. Def not cyano, battled that years ago, mine is grayish in color and clumpy. Bacteria is interesting, i dose vodka to control nitrates so maybe cut back on it? run VHO/MH, 110w/175w 20K new bulbs last month. light feeding and a small bio-load.

thanks.

2 votes for bacteria...slowing down my vodka. any thoughts on cuc that will eat it?

Yeah I'd guess bacteria. Siphon some out. Blow the rest off and let the skimmer go to work. Not sure anything will eat it if it's bacteria. Could use a 5 - 10 micron filter sock to help take it up from the overflow.
