Algae on Clam

The derasa clam I've had for the past 4-5 months has a red leafy algae growing on the clam's shell edge. the clam is not extending it's mantle in that spot.
I was wonder if anyone has tips on scraping/cleaning the algae off the shell. The clam is mounted on a flat rock in the substrate, so could be removed from the tank to do??

put it in a tupperware container full of tank water and use a toothbrush to brush the algae free. Use toothpicks to get in the nooks and cranny's. I had to do the same with a squamosa and it works great.
