Algae on substrate?

I'm new to the hobby and everything is fine in my tank. no problems. I just keep having the same issue with brown diatom algae I think on my substrate. I have plenty of hermits and a sea cucumber who does a pretty good job on every where but where the light is. I keep breaking it up with my fingers but then it just comes back in a week and I have to do it again. My question is if there is anything I can do to stop it or will I just have to keep reaching in and breaking it up to control it? Any help greatly appreciated.

How much flow do you have? Seems like there is a dead spot where the algae is growing.

My son just started a 55 and turbo snails took care of the brown algae.

It'll likely clear up after a while, as the tank continues to get it's balance. You could use a turkey baster once a day to squirt it all back into the water stream for your filtration system to handle.

I have 2 koralia 3's in my 55. I was told that was enough flow... should I have more or redirect the powerhead towards the bottom? I have a good size frag of gsp and a pretty big branch of frog spawn and they seem to blowing around a bunch. IDK..

I dont think its flow its just going thru the brown algae stage. your clean up crew needs more help to take care of it till your next type of algae. I would cut back on feeding and get a couple of snails. Good luck

You definitely don't want to point the k's at the substrate. Try positioning them midway to the bottom of the tank and point them up toward the surface. This way, the icky stuff will cycle upward toward your filtration system and the water current won't give you a sand storm. You have plenty of flow with 2 k'3, IMO.

Don't you love the way the GSP sways in the water?! It's mesmerizing.
