Algae Problems!

I can't seem to figure out what is in my tank is allowing algae of some kind to grow like crazy.

The algae is sort of rust colored, and creates a lot of bubbles throughout the day.

I also have some red and green cyano on the sand surface.

When I change water, it all goes away for about two to three days, then its back.

I'm running a ASM G-2 on a thirty gallon system, running a Phosban reactor with 150 grams of Phosban, its been changed twice in four weeks, and I have to large bags of carbon in the sump.

I've changed food....started feeding Mysis that I screen to remove the small bits.

The tank is run on RO/DI water (0ppm).

I'm not sure what else to do at this point. I guess I could change water every other day for a while.........

I can post a photo too if that would help.

Have you considered adding a fuge with macro algae for nutrient export? Hang-on models are readily available for fairly reasonable prices.

Sometimes tanks go through these phases. I would relax on the W/C and remove the carbon. Reducing feeding to a couple times a week could help also. The algae should starve itself out in short order.

I am planning that for my new tank setup....right now I don't beleive I have enough room....this is sort of a temporary setup in an apartment.

I've always had a cyano problem though, I don't understand what I'm doing to cause it.

Maybe I just need to start over with the tank, just pitch the rock and sand, re-cycle everything.

I just change over to MH lights and I am having the same problem. I decreased feeding, did a partial water change, and decreased the light time. It is starting to go away.

RWillieK, go over to Marine plants & Macro algae forum. The thread is algae issues please help. A lot of info and suggestions. We have been battling it for some time with not much luck. There are also pictures to confirm what you have. Good luck and keep us up to date.

RWillieK I am fighting the same problem you are having. I can get it to go away for a week or so and then it is back worse than ever. What seems to be working for me right now is LOTS of flow. I have 2 Seio 1100 and a 620 all pointed down towards the sand. I also belive shortening the photo period would help, I have my halide on for 9 hours. I am thinking about cutting down to 6 or 7 for a while.
