Algae scraper magnets are rusting in water

What can I do about magnets that re rusting in the water. I got the magnets from someone that used them on their PHs. After cleaning them a bit I noticed rust in the water. Upon further inspection the magnets had a lot of rust inside.

What effect can this have on a reef? Can I simply coat the magnets in a thin layer of silicone and reuse them?

Any ideas?

They're relatively cheap I'd buy new ones... But if you can get it all off and or coated in silicone and feel safe doing so then go for it.

Used them on their powerheads? So they cut into them or modified them in some way so the powerheads would hook on? Sounds like the person cut too deep and saltwater can touch the actual magnets (hence the rusting)

But you can get a cheap max-float for $10 or less usually
