I run mine running from the overflow. Here is a pic



After the 6 inch screen slit, is a 90 degree elbow and the water that doesn't go through the slit goes into the sump

I have an overall flow of 800 gph so enough flow over the screen is not an issue.

To be fair though, I've never built one. So it looks good on paper, just have to make sure that it works correctly for your tank.

I like hgkar's build too. Works if you have a lot of flow.

Consider also an upflow scrubber, because of your limited space. Joey did a great how-to vid on them:
