AlgaeFix Marine to control Hair Algae

Thanks lbj & iamwrasseman for your reports about AlageFix Marine. I hope that any hobbyists who have had problems with it, will inform us of their experiences. It is wonderful to hear positive responses also. This information can prove valuable to other hobbyists who decide to risk using AlgaeFix Marine. ;)

I have dosed twice with Alagefix Marine, with my algae at about the stage of your pics, I have been battling this pest for 4 months and finally realized that it could be the storage of my R/O water. I have a 80 gallon storage tank which has an automatic refill from the R/O unit. With using only about 6 gallons a week, so contamination is a problem. I have now discarded all the stored water and only making enough R/O water to last the week. I will continue the Alagefix Marine dosage to clear the problem hoping it works.

how can your storage water be contaminated if it is fresh.
If I am thinking what he is thinking, he may be holding the water in a garbage barrel with lid. This is how I have mine. And, if you leave the water stored in there for long periods of time without using it will start to grow algae. I do keep the lid on and the R/O system is mounted to come into the top side. I did as he did though and only make the water that I am going to use so that it doesn't sit and stagnate.

We are having a GHA problem too :( after reading many threads on about Alagefix Marine, I will purchase this product too. I have also read there is a Alagefix Freshwater. My LFS said there is no difference in the product...... I ask him if there is no difference then why do they make this product for both marine and fresh water?
I will purchase the Alagefix Marine product.

Do you circulate your water?

We have (2) 65 gallon water storage tanks we normally keep full. I like the to keep the tops off, I think they need air, my husband likes to keep the tops on, he says they don't need air :mad2:
We do circulate the tank water 3 x's a day for 15 minutes.
I wonder if storing this much water is causing my GHA now???????

Both AlgaeFix for freshwater and AlgaeFix Marine have the identical concentration of the active ingredient.

They may be the same, but from my experience in using other products in my field of expertise, there may be some contaminates removed from the AlgaeFix Marine.

The main reason for the price difference, would be to help pay for the additional costs that the manufacturer paid to get the new EPA label for reef aquariums. IMHO, it is worth paying the extra cost to this manufacturer so that there may be more incentive to produce future products which will aid our hobby. ;)

I would keep tops on your storage container to help keep contaminates from the air.......etc from entering the clean water.

Perhaps disinfecting and cleaning the container occasionally may have benefits if you notice any growth occurring in your storage water. I do not see why you should have growth in RODI water if your unit is working properly and you do not allow contaminates to enter the storage containers. :)

Well, now Ed wins that battle with the tops on the storage tanks in the fish room:lol:

You can't win them all.

The R/O water storage tank does have a cover and has only been used for this purpose since new when it was first sterilized, I since found out that if pure water is left sitting it will absorb air born contaminates. The R/O water had 6 PPM TDS at filtering time and 128 TDS in my storage tank. I emptied the tank and found algae growing on the inside walls. The tank is a dark green color so no light enters it.

edandsandy,

Keep us posted on your results, good or bad. :)

OK, will do :)

I snapped a few pictures today of the GHA in the tank.
So our next dose will be on saturday.
see ya then!

zenzence,

My Chaeto & Halimeda seem to be doing ok. The manufacturer had told me that AlgaeFix may slow the growth of macroalgae, but should not kill it.

I still have not had time to properly clean my tank, but the pest is still declining. My computer video card fried and had to replace it along with my C drive which was running out of room. That ended up a full days worth of work. :D

highlandReefer thanks for the response thats good to know I added some more flow and cut light down to a few hours a day for the next couple days. We shall see if it doesnt work going to try algae fix

Thanks

zenzence,

Good luck with it. Keep us posted on results. What are your nitrate and phosphate levels at now? Pics of your pest are always helful for future reference. :)
