I have been reef keeping for years and just started a new tank 2 months ago. I need to clean the front (clear) glass every other day to keep it alea free, the rear glass (painted black) still looks new, almost no algea and never cleaned. What causes this? maybe I should paint the front black too :) I have also noticed that the faces of the black acrylic overflows have started to grow coraline but not the black glass. Any explinations? Thanks

I guarantee that you are growing algae on the rear glass of the tank but you dont see it since it is black. Until you get the hard calcarous algae you wont see it.
The corraline algae usually grows on plastics, PVC, power heads, etc before the glass.

agreed with above. Its there, you just cant see.

by the way, aren't most 'black' glass pieces regular glass but the outside is painted???
