Does anyone know why a red lookin algea is growing all over my liverock. It looks like little red leather. Its growing in like patches, i dunno is that normal or is there a prob. i should know about??????????

One word...NUTRIENTS. Lower your nutrients and algae will no longer be a problem. This is easier said than done sometimes but that is what must be done, one way or another.

You will lower your nutrients by skimming well, not overfeeding, not overstocking, and performing water changes with high quality salt and high quality reverse osmosis deionized water. Also be sure you are topping off your aquarium with high quality RO/DI water.

As far as attacking that type of algea, we need a bit more info about it before we can assist you further.

It sounds like Cyano, which is actually a bacteria with algea-like qualities, so to speak. Do a search for cyanobacteria and see if that helps out. Does it look like this?

I did all the things above and still could not lower my nitrates below 20. Then I was informed about Cheato. This now keeps my tank at 0. When I am away on business my wife overfeeds and it still remains at 0. Buy a clip on socket with the reflector at Walmart (about $5) find a high wattage floursent bulb and I am sure someone can give you a sample of Cheato. Light it for 8 to 10 hours a day and your problem with nitrates will go away.

I see you are a new user, if this is a new tank, it usually cycles out within 3 weeks. When I set up a new tank, I use freshwater Maracyn at 1/4 dosage for 3 days once it appears. I have never had any trouble with it and has never came back after...knock on wood...lol.

Yea it dosnt look like that kinda algea, its more on the rock and inside the sand, looks like red crusty sorta algea but prob its just because some new added corals and fish, my bro had the same prob with his tank but now after like 2 years his tank is beautifull. Thanks guys for the advice and if it does get worse i will research it further......
