Ok so... i have kept reeftanks for about 4 years now, and i am going trying to get a job at my lfs this summer (im 16) Any ways, So the guy who runs it told me to write him a couple paragraphs on Alkalinity, and its effects on reef tanks, (algae, corals, fish...) Honestly, i have never really botherd to worry about my tank's alkalinity before, and i have no idea what it is. Any help?

I suggest a trip over to the chem forum. At the top you will find a "sticky" thread with a long list of articles by Randy Holmes Farley

Start there... you will find more than you wanted to know. I suggest reading and learning, not copying and pasting.

drummereef listed pretty good articles. The master list also has an article about fixing Calcium and Alk when it gets out of balance that is a great refrence.

If you gain a basic understanding of the articles, you will be ahead of many folks in understanding two critical but overlooked factors in running a successful reef especially ones with hard corals.

Good Luck !
