Alkalinity ?

Why is it that most seem to strive for a dkh of 11-14 (4---5 meq/l) in their tanks when natural sea water is 8dkh( 2.9 meq/l).
Even the Seachem reef carbonate that I use to raise carbonate alkalinity states to strive for 11-14 dkh.
Am I missing something on this issue.

I try to keep mine at 8.5 to 9.

Thanks for that sugar.
I worried when mine got as low as 7 dkh but looking at that chart it is an aceptable level.

 

[Whys]

The higher levels are a debated issue, but the reasoning is improved coral growth.
