I have been waiting for the Nikor Micro 105mm AF-S VRII, apparently this isn't going to be available for sale in the US again till about August of '06 according to Nikon. So I had to make due with the Sigma version. Nice lens, very nice sharpness and contrast especially towards the minimum aperature.
I shoot very little in available light, I love to use Nikon's creative lighting system, in conjunction with a flash sync of up to 1/500 sec. ... the world is your oyster (no pun intended).

Let's see what this chunk of glass will deliver...

Let's start simple ... here's a penny

Thanks for posting the pictures and you just sold me on the Sigma lens but will be pairing with the D50.

I can assure you that there is nothing wrong with the D50, you'll love it. The Sigma lens is very nice, it's comfortable to use and tack sharp; however I'm still waiting for the Nikon 105mm Micro VR, according to Nikon I can keep waiting, for at least another 3 months. The Sigma will do just fine till then.

What type of lighting system do you use to take the pics? Do you have any pics of or links to the lighting set up?

Thanks!

I'm shoting the Nikon D70 using the on camera pop-up flash to trigger a handheld SB-800. I expose in manual mode, usually at about 1/320+ @ f/9.2 or better, I can juggle the two around based on need (ie. more depth of field, faster shutter), the SB-800 I'll usually hand hold and direct as needed for effect.
Lately I've been working with an orange filter on the main strobe and I'm planning a "sunset on the reef" series. It's actually looking very cool with some dramatic lighting, but I haven't released any images to the public as of yet.

Nice shots, astrogazer. :)

I've had this same lens for about a year now and I agree that it is pretty sharp lens, especially towards the lowest end on the aperture. My one beef with this lens is the bokeh.., it has none or rather primitive looking. But, for the price of this lens it is a compromize I gladly made. :D

I bought this lens as I had an assignment to shoot, I fully intend to get rid of it as soon as I can get my hands on the Nikon 105mm Micro VR, it's not a BAD lens, bit it does limit my ability to take top notch sale'able' shots.
