Almost 80 out of 127 didn't make it!

When the temperature hit 97F outside Thursday, I came home from work and found that the AC was not working - it felt hotter in the house than outside. Needless to say, the water in my tanks was warm enough that it topped out the temperature gauges. Most of my yumas looked like chunks of flem! The service technician finally arrived today and it looks like it is a freon leak. So far, almost 80 mushrooms (all kinds, but the yumas were pretty much the first to go) have completely melted. Have several FL rics, rhodactis, etc., left, but the yumas took a heavy hit. Still have one rose pink yuma that has the potential to pull through, but the tanks look pitiful.

Anyway - word of caution folks - have a back up system for the summer (my generator in the garage certainly didn't help for this little disaster).

my cats knocked the power out from the wall over memorial weekend. we were out of town. everything looked like hell....the yumas recovered in a few days and the FL rics I still have my fingers crossed on.

hopefully everything recovers for you.

thats why i got a chiller. I found a used one, and boy i am lucky i did. Here comes hurricane season

Yep, but with 19 tanks the price gets way outta my reach. But I am thinking of buying a couple of windows AC units the next time they are on sale and having them as a backup (can't wait to see the Home Owner's Association's reaction to that!)

19 tanks good lord! Are most of them in the same room? I've managed without a chiller but am running PC or T5 lights on my tanks so the heat just doesn't get up there.. mine stay around 81 but we also have a fan on in the room.

Good luck having your shrooms recover.. if something like this ever happens (yes during hurricane season too) if the power goes out or what not you can use battery powered bubblers and ziploc bags filled with ice to help keep temperatures down. When it happens when you're away from the house though its kind of just SOL =\

Actually I have an entire case of battery operated air pumps - left over from when the three hurricanes came through.

No, they are in different rooms.....four in the living room, four in the "playroom" (so much for the kids getting to play), one in the kitchen (don't need much space for a microwave), two in the dining room, two in the master bedroom, six in the converted garage. If the different clownfish would play nice with each other when they are spawing, I could cram them into two hugh tanks - but oh well!

About three weeks ago with A/C (note there were 12 babies on the front rock alone):

Taken this morning (only found one baby so far):

Those still do not look happy. You can see the mouth gaping and the ricordia is still shriveled. Hopefully those will recover, but I've seen them just slowly shrivel away when it looked like that.

Oh yes, I know....I suspect out of all of my yumas, there will only be one that survives - simply because it was in the QT tank that is in the garage which was cooler than the house. But I am pretty much betting that all the other yumas will end up being a total loss. In the first pic above, the rock in the background on the right was completely covered by yumas - there is only one left and it has a gaping mouth.

You can get a freestanding AC unit for the room. Its what I did for my fishroom. 23 tanks in there :)

That is the plan - next paycheck I am getting two AC units and sticking them in the garage next to the generator. Just hope I am home when the next event occurs. :-D
