New to the forum, just want to introduce myself, and say aloha. :wavehand:

Been in the hobby since last July. Have a 180 gal system. Display is a 125 gal FOWLR long.

Was having good success with the hobby until last Nov. when I suffered an ich outbreak after introducing a sailfin tang without quarrantine. I have since learned my lesson, but it cost me eight very nice fish, most of whom died in the fifth & sixth week of hypo. I had one survivor out of the whole disaster, a small tank-raised percula whose doing fine.

I fallowed the tank for six weeks post the outbreak, and no further signs of ich.

I now have three residents of my DT (not counting a couple of cleaner shrimps and a bunch of small hermits for a clean up crew I caught locally last summer) a juvenile Imperator which is growing like a weed, the aforementioned percula, and a royal gramma just out of quarrantine. Shopping for a new fish this week.

I'm thinking about a mandarin, but I'm worried about keeping it alive through quarrantine for lack of pods, any ideas how to get around that? Would like a yellow tail damsel, just cause they are colorful, and easy but I want a mellow tank so unless somebody talks me into it probably not. Also considering catching a blue spotted boxfish, but a little worried about a toxin release. Probably gonna end up with a butterfly or dwarf angel of some sort. Any other suggestions?

I understand that mandarin's do not get ich because of a slime coat they have (or they are less prone to it?).

On the home page of this forum - left side - there is a mandarin FAQ. I may have read it there.

oh and Aloha!!

Alo-HA!
Mandys are resistent, but if you have had a lot of trouble lately, hold off for a while, just to make sure the pest is well and truly gone. They're less likely to bring it in [so are gobies and blennies] but might succumb to iffy water conditions and the presence of the parasite: let your tank settle fully. In qt, you can get live pods in a bottle from www.reefnutrition.com and feed them few drops at a time. Get a bottle of phytofeast [same source] to keep your pods alive and well during the month, and it's not a bad additive for your tank as well.

Hi O Agios, I'm feeling your pain. Did you paint that avatar? Kind of hard to tell by its size but looks to be a seascape, nice colors.

Aloha mwwhite I'm a Florida boy myself, born and raised in Ft. Lauderdale moved to Oahu 25 years ago, but most things I know about the ocean came from Florida.

Great idea Sk8r, would never have thought of it myself. Aloha and mahalo.

Howzit bradah!

Sorry to hear about da ich, but I went through the same thing on my first tank and I lost all of my fish. As for the mandarin, I never had any luck with keeping them alive for more than 2 months, however I agree with sk8r. Hold off and let the tank settle before you buy any more fish.

Anyways, good luck and take it easy.

mandarin's don't get ich. Just dump him in the tank.

I am sorry if I was mis-leading, but he is correct Mandarin's do not get ich.

However, Captain stated in his thread that he was also thinking about these fish :: butterfly, dwarf angel, yellow tail damsel, and blue spotted boxfish. I was suggesting that he hold off until the tank settles before add these fish.

I am sorry for being mis-leading. Also, listed below is a link from Melev's Reef on caring for Mandarin's. HTH

S'up cuz!

You must work Servco Wahiawa.

Came close to getting a Mandarin today, but chickened out cause I figured I'd kill it. Got a firefish instead. Still thinking about the mandarin though, like the thought of skipping quarrantine. That 125 looks kinda sad with only three little fish in it.
