All,
Picking up my 120gal Oceanic Tech Tank this coming week and I will need assistance in plumbing it as it will be my first tank with a sump. If anyone could come by next Sunday, I'd pay for your time. The sump is a 20L with regium area with a Mag9 return pump. Let me know. Thanks!

I'm assuming this is a reef ready tank, probably with 2 overflows?
Shouldnt have any trouble plumbing it there are many how to's on the net, but I would suggest a bigger pump, what are the overflows rated for? You should try and match that. Good Luck.

Did you decide not to sell the korilla's? Just wondering, we were going to order some if you had decided to keep them. Thanks Jason

Jason,
No, still selling them. Going with a single K4 and a Vortech. I will PM you when I tear the tank down. Thanks!

i could prob help. just call me and let me know how you plan to have it hooked up. also you definatly want an extra pump. i have a used quiet one 4000 for sale that would be fine with that 9.5. 334-538-2522, dave of atlantis aquariums.

I'd appreciate the offer, but I'd feel bad if you drove 2 hours to assist Dave. Do I absolutely NEED two pumps for returns? The 20L sump doesn't exactly have a wealth of space. ;)

So, tomorrow's the big day. Going to CRA today to pickup everything but the tank, which a friend and I will pick up tomorrow. I am more than likely going with flexible PVC to minimize downtime. Ought to be fun!

Nope you don't need two pumps. One will be fine. With that size sump I wouldn't even think of trying two. A mag 9 Is plenty big enough for a 120. Depend on your powerheads for flow not your return.. Your return just needs to move enough water the keep your skimmer happy and to keep temps stable assuming your heaters are in your sump. For your drains I'd use standard PVC vs flexible. Flex PVC is good to use on your return line just to help reduce the number of parts and sharp turns. It will also help to quiet down the pump. That or just use some vinyl hose. HTH

i put 9.5's on 75 gallon tanks. sure its a bit much at first . but after about 3 months . its just right. those overflows are rated at like 600 gals per hour. which i know they can take more. anyway the 120 has 2 overflows. one thing that i have found is that the tanks that have less turn over get the dirtiest(algae problems ) because the skimmer doesnt have access to all the waste that is in the tank on a regular basis. you end up with a lot of plant food. i guess the rock process more waste than the skimmer does. so you end up with more nitrates. im not very good at explaining my self but i hope this helps

I'd never put two return pumps in a sump. Your Mag 9 will be plenty. If you find that a sump pump is insufficient you need a bigger pump, not a extra pump. Like 8Ball said, you need a lot of flow but you don't need to run it all through the sump. If you have enough powerheads in your tank to keep the water turning over all the organic material will find it's way to the skimmer. Good Luck :p
