alveopora and open brain!

I've been wanting to by some more coral, but I've been so busy with work that I haven't had any time. Yesterday I got a few hours to goto the LFS and I bought a volleyball sized alveopora and a nicely colored open brain. I have the open brain laying in the sand right now and the alveopora I have mid way up the tank on the side (I might need to move it later).

I'm still kind of new to the coral aspect, so any information on these two would be helpful. The guy at the LFS told me I don't have to spot feed either of them, and they should be in medium-low flow areas. What do you guys think?

don't know about the brain coral but the alveopora *can* be target fed. looks like you got a nice one. lost mine to brown jelly disease a while back. tried everything i could and it just never recovered.

holy crap I just read that and I think I know less then I did before lol. what came down with that in your tank the brain or the alveopora?

the alveopora was doing great, had it for several weeks, at least. got up one day and noticed the jelly at the base. i always look closely at everything before lights out so i KNOW it wasn't there the night before, at least not noticeable. dipped it 2 or 3 times and it just kept taking over. decided to just get it out of there before it spread. nasty stuff!

is that a common thing with coral? I haven't herd of it before now. from the reading I did it comes out of no where, which I think is really strange.

i don't know how "common" it is but it's there and something to definitely watch for. i believe it's thought to be bacterial and from what little i have read about it, no real cause has been determined. also from what i have read, it isn't something that is seen in a natural environment, only in aquariums. go figure!

you can do a search here and find quite a bit of information from others who have dealt with it. since my tank is small (29g) and i have other corals that could have been affected, i chose to remove the alveopora before the disease spread.

you can also find stuff by doing a search of "brown jelly syndrome".

yeah I started looking it up last night and it's really strange. I saw that it wasn't in nature too, so I really wonder where the hell it comes from.

it looks like I have a goniapora now that this thing is opening up. this coral was the size of a volley ball when I bought it. So now that I have this thing, I'm guessing I have to spot feed it. would reef roids be good? can I feed the rest of my corals with the same food? how often do I need to feed the tank?

this from the archives..."alveopora has 12 tentacles/polyp and gonio has 24"

if you do a google search, you will find lots of information comparing the two. good luck with yours. i hated to lose mine, it was gorgeous until.....
