Am I Ready?

My tank is 5 months old. I'd like to add a clam. Do clams need more of an established tank or should I go for it now?

You should be ok now. Words of caution:
Make sure to acclimate your Clam for a long time before placing in your tank.
Check to see what lighting is being used where you are purchasing your clam as to not shock the clam when you place it in your tank. You could bleach your new specimen if the lighting is different between tanks!!!!!You may have to adjust lighting duration and/or position the Tridacna accordingly, to maintain comporable lighting for now.

parrothead22: Thanks for the tips. I did have a Crocea a long time ago when I was a newbie. An overflow block caused my tank to overflow about 30 gallons of water. This triggered the auto top off and severely reduced my salinity. The first to go was the clam. I've since installed backup devices to elminiate those problems. Your lighting advice is appreciated and will be followed. What do you think about buying clams on line (ebay). Prices are much better than lfs but.......1. I like to see what I;m buying and 2. don't know how'll they'll react to shipping. What are your thoughts.

Theroon: yes very similar. I guess it's a very popular arrangment

Your best bet is to purchased ORA Farm raised clams. Clams and shipping are always an issue, though probably not as much of a problem as shipping Xenia.
I, like you like to see what I'm getting, however many of the websites now selling livestock actually show you the piece you will be getting.
Purchasing anything online is a gamble, however shipping techniques have improved considerably over the recent years. If you see a Clam you like online, by all means buy it!!!!!!
Remember that Clams are very touchy and can perish if you don't acclimate them slowly regarding light, salinity and pH...
Good luck!!!!
