Ambient temperature versus tank temperature

Anyone have good information about how the two coincide? I'm just wondering what kind of water temp you could expect if the ambient temp was X. Now I know that there would be a ton of variables in this including tank size, placement and equipment involved but I'm wondering if anyone has done any research in this area.

I'm almost ready to set up my tank and I'm wondering about a chiller. I don't want to get to the summer months and not have a plan in place in case things get hot. I'm curious if I run my APT at 82 degrees will my tank temp rise above that? More so whats the relationship between tank temp and ambient temp? If your house is X then with this equip your tank will be at Y. Something along those lines. Can anyone direct me here? Thanks!

I keep a temp probe for ambient as well as for the display. When relative humidity in the fish room is at 60% my tank is 3-3.5 degrees over air temp. When it is humidity is 15% the tank is 2-2.5 degrees over air temp. I run a 110 with external pumps, LEDs and fans over my sump.

If you run submersable pumps you can add an additional degree or more. If you use MH add even more. JBJ has a calculator on their site to calculate your chiller size where they take into account the wattage of your equipment.

If your room temp will be 82 you will need some form of cooling. I use a room AC unit with a humidity drain tube instead of a chiller. It is cheaper than using my central AC. Adding a chiller to a humid hot fish room would not be effecient.

Okay thank you. That was the information I was looking for. I've been trying to decide if im going to need a chiller during the summer months and it looks like I will. My DT is going ti be in the living room and during the summer it can hit 85 to 90 degrees. I normally hit the AC when I come home as I don't like to run it while im gone. So with that said...im going to need to buy a chiller.
