amount of gfo

i got one of those bulk reef supply daul canisters and was wondering how much gfo you should put in them, i have both about half full right now

if your just starting the use of it, start out with a small amount and slowly add more.

I just fill my reactor up now, and when my tests register phosphates I change it out.

i use GFO from BRS as well. i started with 1 gram per gallon. a tablespoon is about 8 grams.

i just ordered the single chamber reactor, 1lb of the large pellet carbon & 1lb of the pellet gfo on andrew's recommendation when i called

he said on my 29, i should use 1/4 lb of each & it should last 4-5 weeks before needing to change....so 1lb of each should last me about 6 months. maybe by then the economy won't be as crappy & i can order a larger bulk supply of them LOL

May I ask why you went with the dual canister? I have been considering the purchase of a reactor and not sure if I should go with single or double for my 280 gallon tank. Any words of wisdom out there?

i got the dual mainly for what james said about carbon and gfo, im not using gfo and didnt know that you could put both in the same canister, but then it wasnt much difference in price and i have the room under my tank to fit it.

i think the dual is more appropriate for a large tank considering the amount of carbon & gfo is determined by the gallonage of the tank

you could probably get away w/ the single canister one....you'd just be changing out the media very often

I think some people change out the media on different schedules, carbon every 2 weeks and GFO every month, or something like that. If you have one in each canister it makes it easier to just change one and leave one running for longer, GFO being more expensive than carbon might be nice to run it until it's all used up rather than having to mess with trying to only change one in the single canister.

yeah that was the quandry for me....i opted to just go w/ the single & change both at the same time.

who knows, maybe down the road, i'll either add a 2nd one or buy a dual LOL

I believe their website says a max of 2 cups of GFO per canister.

29G tank should have at most 15-20G water, pour 1/4 lb GFO in the reactor is sort of too much IMO.
1Gram per gallon sounds reasonable, I never used BRS GFO before. I am using Prosban.
