Amphipods and Copepods

Hello
I am quite new to the Marine setup world. Had several cold and tropical water set up before.
I purchased live rocks from someone and after couple of days of running the system I saw the Amphipods and Copepods type of insects in the them. I get very mixed messages of them having in there - some say its healthy and the cycle is working good, some say its not a good idea to have them.
I let the system cycle for more that 4 weeks and I have introduced couple of frags in which look healthy.
After having the system for around 9 weeks I introduced more matured rock which had lots of grass corals in it - look great in blue light.
I also purchased some toad stool and cabbage corals. toads seems to never opened since a week and almost like getting darker in colour. The toad was absolutely blooming from who I purchased. I am devastated.
what I saw this morning was some insects on the toad stool which I think may be bothering and hence not opening or may be coz of too much like causing it to die?

I am bit confused... anyone can help?
thanks

Let the toadstool (sarcopython) to acomodate.Sommetime they stay closed in a new aquarium up to even a month or more. Also ,sometimes they shed theyr skin and they cloose for a week .The copepods and amphipods are beneficial.Maybe move it in a place with less light if its too intense and less current. The grass coral is called green star polyps (GSP) and the cabbage, sinularia.

Unfortunately the toad stool shred into pieces and had to get rid off :( , probably I should have waited with more patience, don't know, but I am gutted with my decision.

Other corals and frags look very healthy. I will leave the pods and they seems to be a good sign in the tank.
Will look into pods in more detail later.
thanks for your help

Actually, leather corals prefer high light and good strong flow.

Sorry to hear about your coral. It would seem to me that something was wrong with it for that to happen. The pods were simply cleaning away dead flesh IMO. Pods are good in a system, I'm not sure who told you they weren't but they are beneficial for food for fish as well as part of your CUC. Their numbers fluctuate depending upon how much you feed your tank, the same as bristle worms and brittle starfish.

Glad you went looking for a better source of information..
pods are totally fine and totally harmless as are MANY other "creatures" that you will find over time..

You should read/bookmark this site..
http://www.lionfishlair.com/hitchhikers-guide/
(looks like they changed the site are still working on the "read more" information there)
But all you need are the "thumbs up" icons and "suitability" blurb to know..
