I was just checking these 2 out for my new setup and the ER was rated at 80g system and the G3 was rated for 250g. I am curious how accurate this is. I mean, wuold the ER actually be just as effective as the G3? I know some companies may rate their product different than others.

The price difference between these 2 models was only $5 and the ER has a smaller footprint and height.

I plan to run a all softies system. Zoas, mushrooms, and some LPS like acans and blastos. I think fish would be around 6 total maybe 2 larger ones with rest small.

When your talking ASM and ER it pretty much comes down to what sedra pump and the size of the skimmer.. Almost always the larger skimmer will perform better.. ER and ASM use the same pumps with the same Needle wheel.. I'm quessing you were looking at a ERCS80.. If so I would for sure get the G3.. That ER comes with a sedra 3500 and is smaller.. The G3 comes with a Sedra 5000 and has a larger skimmer body.. Both those equal better skimming!!!!

Now that said I think ASM skimmers are rated a lil High.. Or atleast rated for a lightly stocked tank... I would not run just a G3 on a 250 gallon tank.. maybe a 150!! I've got a G2 on my 125 and it works great.. I have NP with the tank.. I Run a G4 at my house on my 180 and 60.. They are connected together so they both share the G4.. I've been very happy with it.. I dont do water changes much at all and my water stays perfect! I also have about 21 fish!

I would get either the G3 or a Larger ER Atleast a CR135 It has about the same specs as the G3 lol but its 530.00:D

BTW if your wondering why ER charges so much more for the same skimmer.. Alot of it is cause they use Cast Acrylic for there skimmer bodys.. ASM uses Clear Pvc.. No biggie.. It doesn't effect skimming.. Acrylic looks a little better and is stronger.. But cost about 3 times as much :eek2:
