I'm considering creating a reef/species tank. But it would only have one specimen of coral and maybe two other inhabitants out of necessity. If I drop one large chunk of live rock into an established tank, smaller in size, maybe the max being a 55 gal. and then secure a frag of tabled acropora, or a plating monitpora to the piece of rock and incorporate really intense lighting, let's say 1000 watts. Throw in a yellow tang to eat algae, and maybe a cleaner shrimp to help the tang once in a while and let it go. The idea would be to have one incredible piece of growth, just like we keep other solitary organisms in our homes, like cactus or small trees, or flowers, or bansai. There would be one large, hopefully healthy acropora which would eventually fill the entire tank. Of course it would take forever to see relative growth, and in the meantime it would be kind of boring, but if it had good color, an end result would be worth every year of it. Once the coral filled the better portion of the tank, the tang nor the shrimp would be very necessary and they'd be gone. I can't think of any solid reasons why it wouldn't work. Let me know if you all think I'm crazy.
