An Inconvenient Truth comnig to our area

Global warming is an issue, to be sure.... Could the US do more to stave off it effects??? Likely some... I agree we drag ourt feet in environmental issues, but the waste we produce, the pollutants we put into the air is nothing compared to the crap that is dumped ino the oceans & atmosphere from other countries.

Idealists point the blame at the US, but the fact is that we are making (ponderous) progress in the field, where as other countries do nothing to curtail the tons of contaminants they produce. Go to the filth ridden shore in India where they beach & dismantle ships for salvage... ships that carry hazardous materials, but are not cleaned before being stripped. God only knows what being dumped back into the ocean..... The carcinogens that the workers (slaves) are exposed to there isnt just from the flux of the cutting torches they use.... Or, talk to the kids born with flippers instead of limbs in China.

Progress is slow, its glacial in fact... but it is progress. I disagree with you Ron about lessons in conservation having done no good. It obviously has done you some good, you are concious of the impact that we have on the environment. As is Wayne, as am I. It is not the generation that is in school now that are developing hydrogen driven cars, but ours.

I would love to see things move faster than they are, but it wont. I have no worry that the earth will heal itself from whatever scars we put on it... I just hope we can figure out a way to coexist before we are the infection that is killled off in the process.

There is still a comunist party. Not in Russia perhaps. But, quite frankly, whenever you see people screaming for "socialized medicine", government retirement plans and the like, they are expressing a desire for an increased level of socialism and or communism. Whenever you seek to reach into someone else's pocket to use their money to fulfill some of your basic needs-- using the government as an instrument of plunder, taking someone's property through force to give it to someone else (welfare, graduated income tax, medicare, medicaid etc.)-- you are in fact, supporting communism/socialism.

As we approach the 4th of July and everyone is waving flags and praising freedom, let's all remember that with personal freedom comes personal responsibility. As in, you make your choices and you either suffer the consequenses of those choices or you reap the benefits of those choices. Unless of course, you are forced at the point of a gun to surrender the fruits of your labor and responsible decision making to compensate for someone else's irresponsiblilty and poor decision making (welfare et. al.).

In any case, the folks who like those sort of communistic ideas are the ones who are at the heart of the so-called environmental movement these days. Which was my point. Follow the money. Look at the funding sources. Then the truth shall be revealed.

Well said Jason! This idea of goverment funded health care is a little too comunist for me. If they were to pass that, next thing you know they will be assigning housing and appointing certin careers to certin classes of people!!!!
Just because some people are really wealthy doesn't meen they should have to pay more than the person making nothing. Its there money and they should get to do what they wish with it. Im all up for a flat tax rather then these stuiped tax tables. They talk about tax breaks for the wealthy, paying 1 million in taxes is a little different then paying 300 like i did lol.

Actually, the Fair Tax is the plan I support! Wholeheartedly!!!

Those who oppose the fairtax fall into three categories:
1. Liars. They know the plan and understand it and they KNOW it is a great idea-- best one out there. Yet they oppose it because it would mean that they lose power because of it (politicians). If you can't manipulate the tax code to control behavior, you lose your ability to control the masses. Also you have the lobbyists, who oppose it because they lose their high-paying jobs because those same jobs are DEPENDANT on that same ability to manipulate the tax code to suit whoever employs them. As a result, they distort it with half truths and whole lies, they change the terms of the plan etc. in order to criticize it. LIARS! A-holes! Deceivers!

2. Ignorant people. These folks do not have ANY understanding of basic economics and rail against it out of their inability to grasp the economic principles which underlie it. These people CAN BE SAVED through education.

3. Stupid people. These folks lack the mental capacity to grasp the above-mentioned economic concepts and no matter how many real-world examples you cite illustrating these concepts, they reject them out of hand because they just are not BRIGHT enough to understand them-- yet they vote, even when they don't understand the issues or even know WHO the candadates are. Most of these people can't name their senators and congress people... or the Vice President, Secretary of State, Secretary of Defense etc. etc. They don't know what is going on RIGHT NOW much less have the ability to see the consequences of their votes. These people are pretty much useless at best and malignant at worst in a republic such as ours. (Notice I did NOT say "democracy". The USA IS NOT A DEMOCRACY! Never has been and never was intended to be... DEAL WITH IT!) These people can not be saved.

OOOH BOY! Did I just stir the puddin'???

Really this whole thread has gone WAAAAYYY O.T. and I am as guilty as anyone else but this is a subject I can't resist... hey I'm only human. Can we even start a fair tax thread on Reef Central?? Probably not but whatever.

We probably need to stop this thread and get back to the business of tending our reefs. Oh geez. The more I think about it the more I realize I've been a bad boy. Sorry Ron. I'll shut up now and go back to my room and sit in the corner.

Unfortunately RC has some pretty strict guidelines about discussing anything remotely political on their board.

Jason it's a shame you weren't around years ago when we had the Religion & Politics Forum. You would have had a blast :D

Religion & Politics Forum! Holy Hanna thats just asking for trouble IMO.

It is a shame we can't really have free speech anymore but I understand totally. BTW guys I applaud each and everyone of you for behaving yourself on such a controversial thread. I am very pleased with the conduct

WELL DONE
