An introduction.....

Hello, all-

New guy here. I just found a link to MTRC, and a quick email to Jack Starmer led me here. I'm looking forward to joining the club.

By way of introductions, my wife & I kept freshwater tanks for years. As avid scuba divers, we've always been interested in taking care of our own little section of reef at home, but just as we were about to take the plunge after a few months of research, we found out that the first little human critter of our own was on the way. So, we decided to concentrate on being new parents first, and figured the fish could wait. :)

Two children later (ages 21 months & 3 months now), we're interested again. Our nearly-2 year old is already a fan of underwater life....perhaps it has something to do with the fact that we put together a 14,000 piece jigsaw puzzle, 5' tall, 10' wide, and mounted it on the room of her nursery - yep, it's an underwater seascape. Her favorite toys are "fish" "Nemo" "turtle" and various other critters of the sea. I'm so proud she can see "Eee eee" when asked how a dolphin goes, and whales are readily identified. :)

Anyway, I digress. I'll claim to be interested in putting together a reef tank for the little one, but it'll definitely be for my wife and I as well!

So, I'm starting up the research again. While I realize that, in this case, "bigger is better" (or, at least, "bigger is easier & more stable"), the space we'd like to use for a tank will keep us around 30 gallons. As I sift through the posts of the local folk, I'll be particularly interested in any of you that have reefs in this size range or smaller.

I look forward to learning from you....and realize I have much to learn. We've waited several years to start this, and realize that the patience will only help as we begin a tank. We're not rushing a darn thing. :)

The email address you had was from Michigan -- so I suppose you are also new to town! If so, welcome to Nashville as well. Glad you survived my email glitch with hotmail :D

FWIW, nephrologist + reefing is probably a match made in heaven. You can adjust chemistries to your hearts content

With all of the medical people getting into this club we may have to regulate it more maybe create a board for each type of reefer.

:)
:)

Welcome to the club I am sure you will get a lot of input on how to set up a 30 Nasvegas has a nice one. I am not one to ask I think bigger is better and if you don't have room you can always add on to the house. You know never skimp when its for the kids look at the education they will get. :)

Its funny you say that, I was just thinking that everyone here is either in medical or IT. lol

I could have used you on my renal physiology test yesterday morning!

Welcome to the MTRC. I think you will find this bunch very helpfull:D

There are at least a few of us engineering geeks, too, aren't there?

Welcome to the club. Great bunch of people, so ask/share away:).

I've actually been here 4 years - just taking advantage of the free email-forwarding for life as a U Mich alum. I just keep routing my non-work-related email to the account du jour. Saves friends from having to keep up with my yahoo -> comcast -> hotmail -> gmail transitions. :)

Funny you mention that about being a nephrologist & reefing. :) A good friend who's now at Mayo Clinic used to have a sig line that read "You have to be a nephrologist to have saltwater fish." I certainly won't agree with that, but your comment gave me a good chuckle.

Welcome I found this site when I started my tank in Jan and everyone has been nothing but helpful I currently have a 30 long I will try to post up a pic after the lights come on this morning.

Jim, I have a 5.5 nano that's been cruising along for probably 6+ months now if you're looking for info on tanks that small... It needs a water change and a cleaning, but I could probably get some pictures later tonight/tomorrow if you want...

And welcome to the crew...

I would go as big as you can. Reason I say this is because when I first started, I was just wantin' a 5 gal. After all the opinions I decided to go with a 20 gal. I was really happy with the turn out for the first year...still happy with the setup, but wished I would have went bigger. If you're only wantin' to stay in the 30 gal. range, I'd go with a 30 long since it's 3ft long. Here's my 20...

One more medical type is no problem.
Hey Gflat; what about us "Engineering Geeks", that transformed into "Medical Freaks"? :) I'm telling you the human body really is the ultimate machine! I just love helping to take it apart and reminding the surgeons in charge, they are nothing more than an over educated "Maytag repair man"!

I can't speak to you who have mutanted to Medical Freak status;), but I do sometimes wish I'd gone to medical school after engineering. I would always be learning something new (not here right now with the new job, but I hate getting stagnant and not having new things to learn). Prolem is I like to throw wrenches when I can't get it to work (or threatening with sledgehammers). The master machine probably wouldn't respond too well to that:D.

In addition to maybe hearing from some of the folks locally with nanos, you can also check out this months Tank of the Month:
