An Iowan in Alabama

Hello to all of you Alabama reefers. I'm going to be spending the month of February in Gulf Shores, AL and am wondering if there are any good reef related attractions in the area. TIA.

Welcome to AL. :)

Hmm, not sure about stuff to do in Gulf Shores based on reef stuff. You might want to check out mbrk.com...

IowaJim..

In Foley there is a shop called Amazon's River. They do a large number of the tanks you see around Gulf Shores at resturants/stores whatever. They have several large reef tanks setup.

Foley is that last big town you go through before you get to Gulf Shores. After Bay Minette. Foley is where the big outlet center and movie theater is.

Pensacola which is about 35 miles east of Gulf Shores has a couple of shops.

One is off Blue Angel in a strip mall beside Super Target and a really kicking Chinese diner.. :) I can't remember the name of it though.

As far as a big public aquarium or anything like that there is nothing down there.

For some reason I'm thinking there was something in Mobile because I remember reading about damage from some of the Hurricanes last summer. Maybe someone knows what I'm trying to think of.

That sounds like a good day of entertainment. We have friends down there now who spent the winter there last year. They told us that the Costco was in Foley, so we will be going there anyway. Something good to do! Thanks so much!

Everytime I go down south (3 or 4 times a summer) I spend more than 2 days of it in Foley and in Pensacola shopping.

The big outlet in Foley has some awesome places.

Also, places to eat in Gulf Shores I can recomend..

1) EVERY MORNING.... HAZELS BUFFET in Gulf Shores. <-- A must do..

Dude, trust me on this one. They have a breakfast buffet that is awesome. Everything you can think of. They have this Chef that stands by the buffett who makes Omlets. This is not just some ol typical omlet.. No sir. This is the Daddy of All Omlets.. Huge and you have a choice of everything you can think of put in it. Its included with the buffet. Just stuff a dollar or two in his tip jar.

2) Doc's Seafood house
3) Original Oyster Shack
4) The Crab Trap <-- They are actually in Perdido Key but its just east of Orange Beach. And Orange Beach is what 8 miles east of Gulf Shores so its not a big deal. Best Crab Cakes in the area.

Is it Oyster Shack or Oyster House? I love the Oyster House - I look forward to that night everytime I'm there!!

If there's an Original Oyster Shack - I need directions :D

May I also recommend the Back Porch , it's a pretty decent place to eat too.

You are correct Sir... Its Oyster House.. It's on your right coming into to Gulf Shores on 59.. There is some shopping places mixed in with it.. Namely a place to get a great deal on Birkenstocks.. haha

Sorry about that and thanks for the correction. I have to agree on the Back Porch.. Food is good but we had crappy service there last September..

Oh yeah, What about Lamberts - Home of the throwed rolls.. :)

Hurry up July.. :)

Oh man, that place will kill ya :eek1:

Back Porch is good, Lamberts is so so, The Fish Camp is AWESOME if you catch your own fish like my family does. For something like $7.50 a person they will fry/bake/broil/blacken your fish no matter how much ya have. I think we fed something like 25 peopl there once for $7.50/person + tip. It's hard to beat that. I've never been a big fan of oysters and I didn't like the oyster house. There are a few places you can order out good shrimp also, but I totally forgot the names. Nikki's is good, Bayside Bar and Grill is also very good, they have some col tanks there too.

Any place you go really, it's gonna be pretty good.

I didn't say eat the buffet for dinner. :)

There is still a bathroom in that area screaming for mercy after I ate lunch there one day. :) :) :)

Dude you have to agree on the omlet..

Yeah the breakfast buffet is good at Hazel's and I did notice you left out the dinner buffet - I think it's pretty well known to stay away for dinner, probably better off going to Wal Mart and getting the frozen dinner's there. HeHe

As far as the Oyster House - I don't think I've ever had oysters there.....I go for the artery clogging kinda stuff..

Sounds like one of the main attractions is the food. Yup, that sounds good to me. I was hoping that some long walks on the beach would help me drop some weight, but I suppose the meals will work against that pretty badly.

Yeah my wife says Oyster House thats all I Back Porch
ever think Mcdonalds?? about...

There is a beach there......I think

I go for the shear fact of getting out of the armpit of america known as North Alabama. Leave the nextel at home and hit the road.

Yeah, Alabama is blessed with some of the most beautiful beaches around.. It just so happens that Corona and Food end up being there as well. :)

If you go to Oyster House they have Mahi Mahi with a pecan butter sauce that is so fabulous. It is taking a low cal meal and cranking it up with some really bad stuff. LOts of butter.

Well, I'm back from Alabama, and I did have some great food. I ate at the Original Oyster House several times. Really enjoyed eating at the Gift Horse in Foley. Didn't get to Hazels, dang. Had some great food at Jessie's in a little town between Gulf Shores and Fairhope. Enjoyed Lulu's for reasons other than the food, had some great baked oysters at a friends, loved the flounder we bought at Billy's seafood, and generally, just really enjoyed ourselves in Alabama. We met lots of nice people from Alabama, and lots of people from all over the northern US who were avoiding the cold. Thanks Alabama!
