Anemone Dying??

So I got this anemone from a friend and I think it's dying, actually I am surprised it's still alive. It's been in the tank for about 3 days. Yesterday it detached from the rock and I saw the back of it's mouth all gross looking. Figured it was dead, and then today saw it at the back of the tank, half on the sand, and half attached to a new part of the rock. The tenacles are full but are very limp and flowey. The clowns I have still have ignored it.

Do I take it out, leave it in??

I just did a 20% water change in hopes to turn it around. Any suggestions?

If you are new to saltwater (like your signature says) i'd stay away from anemones for a while..but lets see..what are your water parameters?..lightning??..

Actually an Anenome was the very first thing we put in our tank... very easy to take care of. A pic of your Anenome may be helpful loveatfirstreef. With the fact that it was just recently put in your tank it may just be trying to find a spot in it that it likes. Have you fed it anything yet? I usually never feed ours as it gathers it's food as the food floats by, but every now and then I will direct feed it some brine shrimp.

Don't stress over it yet... and whatever you do, don't take it out of your tank until you're positive it is dead.

I wouldnt have gotten an anemone so soon except it was given to me and had no where else to go. My params are good except nitrates are a tinsy bit high at about 20 ppm. I have 29 gal, 2 clowns, 2 fire shrimp, yellow polyp, 40lbs LR, 130 W Coralife light.

I'm starting to think it's splitting..?? It looks like there are two different parts of it..??!! How would I know it's splitting?

Now it's wedged itself between rocks in the back of the tank.. is there anything I can do for it to help?

So basically leave it in until I see tenactles falling off??

Yes, just leave it alone... not much you could really do for it. Give it a few more days, it will be fine. Not sure about the splitting issue.

if its dieing the tenicles wouldent fall off, it would look more like

its melting
it may have white coils come out of its mouth (that would be its guts)
its foot (or bottom) would deteriorate
hermits/bristles etc may start bugging it

if its splitting.. and this is just what ive read, not experienced...

but, it would split at the foot, and work its way up to the mouth
it sometimes will put its foot on two different rocks

and after it splits and while its splitting, it will look like its dieing


is it sticky? will food stick to it, and is it sticking to the rocks?
Ive read anemones may 'hide out' for a week or so if they are ill or are adjusting etc

It's now moved completely to the back of the tank. It's sandwiched itself between the rock and glass and is sitting on the sand. I guess I will just have to wait it out.

dosent sound bad at all. give it a chance! its foot sticking inside a crevice is a good sign

i am in the same boat as you. My anemone was doing great and then the temp went up in my home and my temp in the tank went up to around 84. I was at work and not much i could do about it....not to mention I lost 1 soft coral. I turned the air on in my home and everything is doing better. My anemone still looks bad. It's a Long Tent. and I think he's prety big. It has shrunk to the size of a 1/2 dollar....not to mention this morning he was completely upside down....with his foot vertical in the air. I have no idea what he is doing. Any one have any advice?

I had one that did the same thing but I found out later that my salinity was off.

My salinity is at 121. He was freaking out all night. I read that if his tent. become very withered and small he may be starving. so I fed him. This morning he looked like a strawberry. His tent. where small, and he had almost completely "sucked" himself in. I would hate to lose him if he's dying. Any advice? His color is still pretty good.

Update: my anemone completely moved to a better spot and it's doing great. It's like tripled in size now that it's fanned out!!

I thought it was a bad idea to put marine disposals into the sewer system? I had always heard that they really should be put in ziplocs and thrown in the trash.

I may just be smoking something though...:bum:

I know I'm supposed to ziplock them but I suspect that in Springfield MO you're a little safer.
