Recently I won a bid on eBay for a purple magnifica. Now the seller is telling me it's a H.malu. So before I possibly cancel my order because I really wanted a magnifica. Can someone tell me the habits of H.malu compared to magnifica. Will they host the same fish? Is the placement in the tank the same? Any info would be greatly appreciated.

I don't think the placement is the same, and from what I've seen the colors of the magnifica are better.

There's not a lot of info or pictures of H. malu's on line that I've been able to find, except for a small one. They stay smaller, and towards the bottom of the tank, and are usually kind of a drab color. Given the limited amount of info I could find, and assuming that it is correct, I would not pay the price of a magnifica to get a malu.

I think the magnificas like to perch on rocks at the top of the tank, are bigger, and more colorful. Usually their bases are a nice color and they get to show them off since they're on top of the rocks.

As far as the fish they host, I can never remember, so I will be totally useless on that point :)

You can try googleing H. magnifica (or ritteri - I'm pretty sure they go by this too) as well as H. malu and see what you come up with.

Also check the stickies at the top of the forum, I think you may find hosting info under the FAQ's for anemones. It's been a while since I looked, so I could be wrong - but if I remember right, there's some really good info there.
Good luck!

Interesting that the ebay seller would wait until the auction ended to notify you that the anenome is not what he led you to believe. Doesn't sound very honest to me.

I re-read the anemone FAQ and it's very helpful, I think it will answer most of your questions, it even provides a few pictures :)

I think he just made a mistake. At least he notified me before it was shipped, and gave me a complete refund. So there's no harm done.

On the side note is made me research a little more about the malu. And I was surprised to find that very few clown fish will host it. I also read that you shouldn't try to keep a malu in the same tank with S. gigantea or S.Haddoni. Because the chemicals this anemone gives off as a detrimental effect to those carpets.
