Anemone shrinking kit

I have a green LT bubble anemone with a yellow stripe maroon clown that have been pals for well over 10 years in my 75 g mixed reef tank. The problem is the anemone is getting HUGE! and is starting to cause problems with other nearby creatures. Do I get rid of my clowns boosum buddy?

no way. can we see a pic? youve had it ten yra and it never split? thats awsome. how big do you think it is?

theres a few things you can try to help it along in splitting like feeding more often

at IMAC last year, Calfo showed how to "frag" a nem. Remove your anemone from the tank and from whatever it is attached to. He said that an ice cube at the base of the foot is usually enough to make it let go. place the nem on a cutting board, mouth side up. take a scalpel (razor blade) and make a smooth incision from the center of the mouth to the edge of the anemone. Rotate the board 180 degrees and make a similar incision to complete the separation. Don't saw at it, make the cuts clean. He claims, in about an hour the anemones have healed and should begin growing around the mouth parts remaining. in about 6 weeks, you should have two completely healed anemones.

Id love to see a pic. Heres how big my nem got before it split 3 ways. i had it 6 months in the pic, and it was 3-4 inches when i got it.

I kept a clone and its about 8 inches already. do you feed it much?

the maroon is 2 1/2 inches or so for size referance

i had a long tentacle that i bought at petco like a year ago and it was about 5inces across and i had it a 29gallon under powercompact lights it grew to about 14 inches in under 8 months and then when i added halide it would sit directly under them and steal all the light needless to say it had to go so i gave it to a club member here and he put it in his 180 and its is now 20inches across and growing
i am glad i did not have to cut it in half replaced it with a bleached bubble tip so that is taking a lil longer to come around it has doubled in size in two months so watch your nems if it fits in your tank now it will soon be way too big

Scubayou i want to see a pic of this 10year old bubble tip please

I've heard you can get BTA's to split by increasing the feedings, and then doing a big waster change. I don't know about LTA's, though. Maybe give it a try and let us know?!

I've heard the same, but not combined. Huge water changes actually likely cause stress (in turn splitting) and feeding regularly just causes it to grow quicker (in turn splitting).

It's hard to gauge exactly how big it is. The way I've always seen yours, it's spread out wide on vertical surfaces. Mine is still horizontal in that rock, and will spread out over the two rocks next to it to bath in the light.

Yes, still primarily mysis.

mine does have a habit of sticking it top rim real high. I would swear its starved for light the way it found the highest spot it could, but the light bulb is new and its the same as the lastone.

lol thats funny about the rock, its only about the size of a golf ball in there :) looks great btw. donno if its your lighting oe what but the color in the pic is nice!

My anemone shrinking kit includes latex gloves, a bucket, a bright light, a cutting board and a sharp new straight razor. :D

Not that I'm telling you to chop yours, because I don't know how well LTA's would take that. But your subject line inspired my smart-aleck comment. :)

Couln't get a shot that wasn't fuzzy but here you go anyway. Clown is about 4 and a half inches. Overflow box is 9 inches to put it in perspective

im a bad id'er but i dont think its a bta or a lta... but i cant remember the name of the nem im trying to recall. but if my head is right, then the one im thinking of does not split

On occasion it has very promenent bubble tips. When it was small it looked more like a green bubble tip. Now it is an overgrown monster. Wish I can get a closer better pic. I may try again .I don't really know how to upload pic. havn't done it in awhile. Thanks to all who have replied even though I have the same problem.Think I am going to rearrange the tank so it is not dead center. Going to try to get it in the corner. The clown is going to be ****ed.He has been known to draw blood on me on occasion.

If you frag it make sure you put it in a different tank for a bit. Don't put it back in your display. There was a post a while back. Someone did that and killed a bunch of livestock.
